I have a few and haven't seen to much buzz on these on this board.

I think they are one of the most interesting dates in the series along with the 1880/79cc dollar.

Reusing the dies from one year to the next happened, just not very often it seems.

Not expensive and fun to collect.

I don't follow vams too much and PCGS now lables these when submitted.

Otherwise I would have missed them.

I started collecting the various 1880 overdate dollars after Ted Clark published a series of articles on them in Collectors Clearinghouse in 1970. This was back when the common BU dollars were $2 each. I always found the 1880/9-S to be rather boring.

  • I like the 1880/9 and 1880/79 S mint Morgans a lot. I have a few of them. The 80/79 seems a little harder to find. image

Funny you mention this. I has a recent submission where I had one come back 65+. I had no idea it was an overdate until PCGS said so.
    Collecting since 1976.

    This thread needs a picture

Todd did a nice close up on the frosty overdate showing the faint 7 and underlying 9 which really pops out at you.

One of my favorite overdates in the Morgan series.
