Question regarding 1980's and 1970's Football Wax Boxes

Wondering what the consensus is from the unopened collectors or anyone else on this....

Almost every 1984 Topps Football Wax box I see has the black stripe across the front. How much of a premium (if any) does a box without that black stripe get? What about 1986? Or 1981? 1984 just seems to be the rarest to find without the stripe...

Not sure on a number, but I won't buy wax boxes with a line. It's just not what I want for my collection.

Boxes with the "black Mark" better known as "X-outs"

These are boxes that were returned by dealers and stores for credit from Topps.

I personally will not often buy any "X-out" boxes. Why?


Because even though the packs may be legit, the sequencing may not be.

1983 Topps football is a perfect example. The Marcus Allen Rookie is a double print and should be an easy pull from an unsearched 1983 Wax Box.

Dealers would often open wax packs until they found a couple Allen Rookies and then consolidate the remaining unopened packs back into full boxes
and return them for credit.

I purchased two 1983 Topps football wax boxes(X-Outs) from BBCE and didn't pull one Marcus Allen Rookie( A double Print card) Whats the odds of that?

This is nothing Against Steve, as the packs were all legit, but it is impossible for him to know if the packs are all from the original box pulled from the sealed case or not.

So to answer your original question, YES, I believe that "Non-X-Out" boxes from a proven Sealed case are much more desirable and command a premium.

I believe most experienced "unopened" people are aware of this and will agree.

That's all true. It's easy to buy an empty box that didn't have an x-out and transfer the packs so you just have to go with your gut sometimes

Thanks guys. There is a reason I asked, as I have a couple 1984 boxes for sale, both WITHOUT the black X. One has been sealed and certified by BBCE.
