Linkage St. Louis Cardinals are denoted as having clinched a playoff birth, but ESPN has them listed as 99.9% playoff chance. Brilliant. I've never understood how they got that percentage, but I'm sure the credibility is gone now.
As morbid as it sounds, there is always the potential for a plane wreck, hotel explosion, or any number of other disasters that would keep the percentage from being 100%, if it forced Major League Baseball to put in a substitute team.

To my future fellow counselor ... I am not sure if the organization would have the right to bring up players from the minors in this scenario, but let's assume they cannot and MLB would have to put in a substitute team. If they are "substituting", for whom are they "substituting"? Yup, for the Cardinals, who currently have a 100.00% playoff chance. LOL How the hell is school going? I hope well. (Wow, just looked at my diploma and it says I graduated from Law School 30 years 23 days ago. DAMN!!!!!)

All professional sports leagues have a contingency plan for a disaster such as this. I believe MLB's is pause the season for two weeks. Each team remaining designates 8 players as untouchable and the disaster sticker team drafts a new roster from the remaining players.

Wow, that's fascinating, and blatantly unfair to the teams that are left IMO. Cool to know though, thanks.

Doug,
I'm tired, it's beating me down physically, sleep is scarce, and free time is SEVERELY limited, but yet, it's intellectually stimulating as well. I actually learn something new almost every day now, and for an old guy, that's fun.
I just hope to do well enough to continue on next semester and ongoing They keep telling us that 25% of us will NOT be there next year due to not making the required minimum grades. If I'm not back, I want it to be on my own terms, not because I couldn't make the grade.
I have no doubt that you WILL be there next year if you want to. Like I told you in one of our many discussions when you were considering Law School, the FIRST year is by FAR the hardest of all the years. Stay focused and you will be graduating before you know it! Damn, I may even fly to Texas in 4 (5?) years for your graduation!!!!!
STAY HEALTHY!

There are other rules regarding it, but its been awhile sense I've read it. I believe a disaster stricken team can only draft a single player from each other team and any player selected must have at least a year of MLB service to prevent top prospects from being poached. The official rule is in the MLB by laws and rules if anyone cares to look to it up.

Playoff odds are not based on 'credibility' but math, like all statistics. I'm guessing you checked the numbers before it had updated with the playoff clincher, as it's showing 100% now.
