Early to mid 80's Topps... Is vending the best for PSA 10's?

I have never opened a single vending box in my life and am thinking about buying some from BBCE. I was wondering your thoughts on potential PSA 10 cards. Is vending the best? Cello? Rack?

Rack would be a near unanimous choice for best chance at 10s, with vending near the bottom in terms of unopened. Cello/wax somewhere in the middle, depending on year and cello tightness/corner damage likelihood.
  • Agree with racks for highest PSA 10 potentials. Vending I only buy if I'm going to leave it unopened...and I rarely do that.

It usually goes in this order in terms of best potential for grading
    Rack
    Wax
    Cello
    Vending

I think 83 and later the cellos were not wrapped as tight as bricks like the 70's cellos.
I personally like vending cause every now and again you can find a gem in there, plus the price point is usually good on them.

On the upside, vending is cheap and has no wax or gum stains. On the down side, there is a reason it is cheap. Gem corners, particularly for the era are few and far between.

  • I have a strong strong feeling that gaspipe's 1981 vending case break will be the exception to the rule...

Thanks for the info, guys. I did go ahead and buy a few vending boxes just because the price was cheaper. I bought Topps vending from 1982, 1984, and 1985. Plus, I bought 13 1986 Topps rack packs, and a rack pack each from 1982, 1984, and 1985. I will probably do a thread with pictures to let you guys know how I did. Maybe there will be some things to send to PSA.

While I certainly concur that Racks seem to be the best bet for PSA 10's, I have had a lot of success with vending over the years. Maybe I just was lucky, but I have had a bunch of 10's from 1979, 1980 and even more from 1981. I even pulled a few really nice ones from 1978 vending. Of course, all of the vending I cracked came from BBCE..... I just really like the idea of 500 cards that have never been touched....they look pretty cool in the brick, too- until you dive in.

I was not as lucky with 82 or 83, finding very few 10's.

Good Luck in your search for 10's.

Depends on who you buy it from . . .
  • Fritsch seems to have some vending boxes left. Any words of caution or encouragement on picking some of those up to break?
Would think they are running it down to zero on 70's and 80's...

If he does I'll be impressed. Really impressed.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the PSA 10 collector he didn't exist.
