USPS Signature Confirmation question

Let's say I ship a package with signature confirmation. The buyer can't be home during delivery times, and can't make it to the post office either. Is the buyer allowed to sign the peach delivery notice and request the package be left for him? Or is an "in-person" signature required?

Does anything change if the signature is only required due to insurance?

I am no lawyer! However I assume he gives up the right to sign for the actual package when he signs the paper, he is in fact signing for it as far a delivery is concerned.

Common sense does not often work for me though.

  • I do that a lot actually, and the risk is then on me. If not home when delivery attempt, you can sig/print name the form that was left and place it back oin your mailbox. Go to https://redelivery.usps.com/redelivery/ and enter in the shipping number and when you want the package redelivered.

By doing this though there is a risk. The postal person could literrally get thesigned form from your mailbox or wherever you leave it and not leave the package. You signed for that you got it though.
