If you could only collect one year, of any sport, what would it be?

What would you choose if you were restricted to collecting just one year of any sport? And if you say '52 Topps, an obvious answer, what would your backup be if you didn't collect that year?

  • I've been asking myself that for a while. If I had to sell all my cards, which year would I keep? It's a tough choice.

  • Would be a very tough choice between 1951 & 1985.

that's easy. what year did they start up again with the baseball cards in bags of Mother's Cookies? '89? '90? whenever, that was a great time to hustle cards. i'm recalling numerous trips to the local supermarket and hoarding several bags at a time. i'm collecting nothing but Mother's and feasting on those cookies. num num num num num....... image

No doubt for me here: 1979 baseball. That is the first year that I bought cards. I remember being a 7 year-old buying packs out of a wax box every week from a small candy store in my hometown.

1953 Topps for me. It's as much art as baseball cards imo.

1975 - This was the first set I ever completed. I love the regular issue set and am starting to grow fond of the mini set as well. I can't get enough of it.

I'd have to go with 71 as my fav football set, though it could take a lifetime to piece together those 72 high numbers in high grade.

For me it's 1957. A great baseball set that year, with a nice design and a decent amount of HOF rookies. The football set is also great, with the Unitas, Starr and Hornung rookies. The basketball set has the Russell and Cousy rookies. Don't know too much about 1957 Topps hockey, bu there must be something good about that set too.

1957 Topps from any of the 4 sports. A great year for all 4 sports.

1956 Topps Baseball or 1965 Topps Baseball
  • Not sure about the year, but whatever the year, I would want to make sure that all my cards were sealed inside an old cardboard case, with shrink wrap around the case.
That to me is the most appealing way to build a collection.

  • I would probably go with 1985 Topps baseball as well.

For a challenge, I would go with 1976 football.

I really like the 56 baseball set, a favorite of mine, but I do not have a connection with it. I was not alive at that time to buy packs. I would say either 75 Topps or 84 Topps baseball.

1963 Topps baseball. I think it was a stunning issue.

1960 Topps Baseball in PSA 8. It's all I am working on at the present time and I'm not going at it with any gusto. I'd like to complete it before I croak. Odds are I'll be under before my quest is over.

  • 1984 Topps Football. That year my mother would give me $2 for lunch everyday. Then, instead of paying the $1.95 or whatever it was for a full lunch I would spend 1/2 of it on cookies and a chocolate milk and save the rest for my walk home after school. On my walk home I would stop at the local drug store and spend the rest on wax packs of the 1984. Back then I had about 4/5 of each card in a 3 ring binder. Of course a few years later I sold them when they weren't yet worth much at all.
I'm a big Nolan Ryan fan OK???!!!

Same here for me, except it was the 1973's that I rode my bike to the ice cream shop/candy store each week to buy. First year buying cards, still my favorite set.
  • I don't think people are understanding the premise.

I would collect 2005 baseball. One of the best years overall for baseball cards. Tons of great sets and probably the best overall rookie crop for one year.
  • I'de go 48 baseball. 48 Bowman and 48 Leaf is enough contrast to satisfy me, although I am kind of cheating with 48 Leaf being produced in 49.
  • If money were no object, I would collect the 1911 T3 Turkey Red baseball set in the highest grade I could find. I think those cards look absolutely amazing.

In a realistic world, 1956 Topps baseball.

    1911 - Baseball
  • This is an easy one for me. My first Topps pack was 1969 but I really started in 1975 buying rack packs from a local grocery. School, girls, etc got in the way for a while but in 1983 I jumped back in hard. I'm pretty sure that I have purchased and opened more 1983 Topps baseball than any other year, company. Seeing Wade Boggs smiling face and all those other great rookies hooked me. I love the supervets and the Brett and Rose cards. 1983 Topps Baseball without a doubt !

Definitely 1911 baseball for me. That gets me T3 - the best set of all-time, IMHO - and some T206, too.
