1849 saw the creation of both the Gold Dollar and the Double Eagle in response to the new supply of gold streaming East from the gold fields of California. The Gold Rush would literally change the United States forever and this little beauty was there. Struck in New Orleans from freshly mined California gold, it is both historically significant as well as aesthetically pleasing.
This very nice example, of a highly sought date, possesses an abundance of remaining mint luster about the devices and a strong reverse strike. The coin is a pleasing light honey golden color. The majority of 49-O Gold $'s exhibit a "mushy middle" reverse, but not this one. Super nice for the grade with excellent eye appeal.
