Double stacked bid

In the thread about the PSA 9 Aaron that sold last night there is discussion about the double stacked bid on that card. What is the strategy or reason behind a double stacked bid?

No strategy. Someone made a high bid, and then determined that the bid wasn't good enough, so they bid an even higher bid sometime later.

While there's no real "strategy" behind doing something like that, it could be that the guy doesn't want to snipe and decided that he didn't bid enough the first time and wants to make sure he doesn't get out-bid.

It's not a good way to bid on ebay though, since you expose yourself to shilling and people who want to be annoying.

Usually putting in a low 'guesstimate' bid before getting a chance to do your research, and then a higher 'to win' bid once you realize your initial bid probably won't hold up through the final seconds snipes.

A lot of times it's just a psychological ploy to discourage others from bidding but often the "double stacked bid" is only the next bid increment higher.

When I see those on items I'm interested in, I'll try to take out the lower bid before placing my snipe.

Foolish way to bid. As bids approach their high bid, buyers often throw in a "safety bid". Encourages shilling and or other bidders bidding you up. Remember bid retractions are allowed.

Either bid how much you are willing to pay (which in this case could be the fact) or go with a snipe service.

Why not get your item as cheaply as possible?

  • I've done it occasionally. I just put in a second bid that I'm happy to pay if I win the card at that price. Usually with sellers I like.
While snipes are great for getting a bargain, they can be discouraging for small time sellers who then don't bother to list things or go for a high BIN.
