Modern Oddball

Are there any modern oddball sets being produced? These are the most fun for me, thought I'd try to pick up some related to current players I'm collecting. Any help would be appreciated.

I think I have any and all Topps odd ball sets up to 1994 ( ...after that just base sets, update sets and Heritage).

I did anything baseball Fleer put out, which was a lot, prior to 1981, after that just base sets and updates to 2007.

I assume you are asking about more recent stuff ?

  • I don't think there is too much in the last years.

Of course the 70's to mid 90's were a gold mine for food issues, store
and restaurant issues, and dozens of other types of sets.

The SF Giants put out a stadium-give-away team set just about every year. Do those count as "oddball" sets?

If you have the fortitude to be a Cubs fan, they put out a season ticket holders set this year of past and current stars in retro Topps card formats. They also distributed the set in 4 parts at 4 Cubs games this season

Yes, asking about more current stuff. I would include stadium issue, for sure. Also, anything like a department store, food or police/fire issue. Pretty much anything that wasn't issued by the major companies that has a good likelihood of being graded.

That Cubbies set is cool, thanks for the info. I'm a White Sox fan, but can appreciate any set really.

Kahn's is still doing a Reds set every year. The recent ones are getting tougher as they're only handed out to kids (around 5000 sets produced) vs. the past when they went to the first 40K fans in attendance. Other than those mentioned already, I don't know of many recent oddball. It seems the focus is more on how many insert/parallel sets can be packed in product from the major producers.

I found some food issue ones here from last year. It's actually one I've been looking for. I work with Garza's sister so I've been wanting to find a card of him but he doesn't have any major or college cards I could find whatsoever.

So, I was pretty excited initially because they're $2.00 ea which is no big deal. I put a handful in the shopping card and added shipping, OUCH! Shipping was $105.00 for 2nd day, the slowest option. Neeeeeevermind...

OK, I called them and discovered the issue. Since they're only sold with the donuts with which they were originally packaged and they need to remain frozen in order to avoid spoiling, 2nd day is the slowest they'll go to Texas. Ground is still $6 something per box of "healthy" donuts, LOL.
