Columbus Clippers Police set Don Mattingly..

IS there a way to tell if one is a reprint/fake and one is original? I have noticed that the ones PSA is grading barely has a right border and the are several listed ungraded that have a right border.

For what it's worth - I recently picked up a copy of this card, and would be curious to know the answer to your question, as well. There are several board members that seem to have lots of insight into these minor league issues.

  • The 1981 Arbys Nashville Sounds Set (with Mattingly) was reprinted (they say by the team, but who really knows) and there is no way to distinguish the original from the reprint. Thus, 90 in PSA 10 killing the value.

The 1982 TCMA Columbus Clippers has been reprinted too. I would definitely buy a PSA graded one. Somewhat surprisingly low pop at 17 in PSA 9 and 9 in PSA 10. A PSA 10 has been on ebay for $799 for a while now. I don't feel the seller has it significantly overpriced.

The card you referenced, the 1982 Police Columbus Clippers is typically horrendously centered L/R as there is a photo credit running down the left white border of the card. Thus none currently in PSA 10. If the L/R white borders on this particular card happens to be centered, the photo credit typically gets miscut. My best advice in looking for original is magnification against a PSA graded one. Trying to get this card in PSA 10 reminds me of the carnival games I will be throwing money away on my nieces at the San Gennaro feast in Little Italy this weekend. Impossible to win as it's rigged against you. Same goes for the Riley's Redbirds issues of the early 80's that contain Andy Van Slyke. With this issue, if the L/R white borders are 50/50, then the "ds" in Redbirds gets cutoff as they are on the extreme right side of the card even when the card is very left justified. Physically impossible to get a 10.

There is also an unauthorized Columbus Clippers issue that is Black and white and depicts Mattingly in a late 19th century uniform. The card is worthless.

My insight is that you'll be less likely to have bought a fake if you buy the card included with a set. It's about $50.00 for the 25 card set.
