1981 Topps - a cry for help

I can't seem to stop buying unopened 1981 Topps baseball boxes.

Is there a 12-step program or anything I can join? image

Yes, the next step in the program is to start buying 1980 boxes and then work your way backwards. image

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

Ha! I would but I can't afford to sell either kidney at this point yet!

I do have one BBCE 1980 Topps wax box though, glad I got that before prices on it started going nuts.
  • I cut my teeth on 80 and 81 as a kid loved that issue almost as much as 80. The hats just work for me. I say the hell with it horde all you can!!

I think that's part of the problem, '81 was the first year I remember buying, begging for, "flipping" (remember that?) baseball cards...for some reason the 1981 George Brett and Reggie Jackson cards with that huge "A.L. All Star" red banner over the top were my favorites.
  • I remember flipping my doubles, knocking down a leaner! Haven't thought of that in awhile! Great times!
  • Buy a case of 1988 Donruss. You will never want to open another case again.

  • Get a 1981 Topps card graded.

You'll never want to go NEAR another 1981 card again.

  • I'm the same way with 1983 Topps, the first year I returned to collecting. My first purchases were 1975 Topps rack packs ! I have thousands of 1983 Topps and many sets that are mint but I keep buying them, its a disease !!!
  • I know the feeling - just looked at 15,000 cards from 1981 last night trying to decide if Im too lazy to put them into sets or not.

Its amazing how "unconfident" I am in my grading skills on 1981 compared to other sets - and thats after submitting 400 from 81 through the grading process.

Looking at the population report for 1981 Topps, there are a lot of toughies. The Fernando RC is the most known one, but how about #18 Glenn Adams? Out of 26 submitted, no 10's, 9's, or 8.5's....

I see people say that PSA is tough on this set, but I don't know that PSA changes it's standards from set to set. This set, more than any other older Topps issue, has a lot of issues with print defects and general surface problems. It's a mystery to a lot of collectors because those are the hardest flaws to spot. The Fernando RC is notorious for printing spots everywhere. The centering is better than years past but that's only 1 part of the grading. Very tough set

Yes, there is the thedutymon step to getting over your hoarding tendencies.........................

Step #1 Place unopened Box on table.

Step #2 Place opened Beer on Coaster

Step #4 Remove Packs (or Cello's, or Trays or ???) from box

    Step #4 Commence Rippin'

Steps #5-#12 don't matter, you just got the important stuff out of the way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just went through 18,000 Topps 1981 from vending boxes.

Did my first PSA submission of about 25 cards.

    Fugly.
