Help with a Roberto "Bob" Clemente Autograph

Just a quick question and hoping someone out there can help me. I have a 1959 Hall Of Fame game program with some great signatures on it. One of the signatures is BOB Clemente. I am selling the program for my Uncle who had the program JSA certified. The certification sates the signature B Clemente HOF is genuine but I have never seen him sign his name this way. Is this rare? If so why am I having such a hard time selling it? getting a lot of questions regarding its authenticity.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  • That kind of item takes a specific buyer so you'll have to be patient. There are a lot of retards out there that will ask dumb questions so I wouldn't worry about it too much considering it's JSA certified

    JSA does make mistakes.

It is widely known that Roberto HATED being called Bob. It's not likely he would have signed an autograph that way and with respect to Roberto I think most collectors wouldn't want such a signature in their collection.

Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Would you mind posting a scan?
  • Trying to add a scan, not sure how. New to this . I uploaded the file and click attach and nothing happens.

But I'm confused. If it is something not commonly seen, why wouldn't a collector want it. And If JSA "makes mistakes" then why get authentication at all? The program also has autographs by Zack Wheat and Frank Fritsch, Bob Prince, Christy Mathewsons wife and John McGraws wife. The signatures are on a 1959 Hall of Fame program. It seems to me it quite a rare piece. I just wish I could find another instance where he signed Bob.
  • I know about Clemente and how he was a very proud man but to certify an auto like that wouldn't they need an example to compare it to. Other examples of him signing as Bob. Kind of like the Mantle auto's before he hit the show circuit and signed a million balls. It's noticeably different. Who knows what kind of mood he was in in 59 he was alot younger than the activist/ball player of the late 60's and seventies. By the way he's always been a favorite of mine him being a fellow Devil Dog and all. As great a man as he was a balls yet. Rare nowdays
  • Damn auto correct, I meant to write he was as great a man as was a ballplayer!

I have a 1960 world series signed baseball with Bob Clemente on it. You can see on the scan, the second from the top. This is also certified by JSA. hope this helps.

  • Here is the scan of the autograph.

  • Maybe he was as practical as he was proud, small space gets the abbreviated version.
  • I certainly hope so. My Uncle is sick and I am helping him sell off his memorabilia collection. He is quite proud of this item. I appreciate all the help you guys are providing and will turn to the posters here for help in the future (as well as add my two cents when I have something to offer)

Here's the scan of the whole program

I think it is legit. As he don't sign many as Bob, it should be rare.

It looks like he signed Rob Clemente. Here is an example of his full name..

I think the ball is definitely Rob, don't know what to think of the sheet.

JSA never makes mistakes and I tend to throw a couple grand at items without asking any questions. It's new to me that Clemente also signed with "Bob". He has one of the most unique and best signatures I've ever seen. To ask the "Bob" question would seem legitimate to me. I'd actually want to add it to my collection. Provenance would be important so any seller would be wise to answer the best they can.
  • Well thanks again for all the help. I relisted the program with more details and a full photo of the JSA cert.

My thinking on it is the other autographs tend to make me believe the Clemente is genuine> Two HOF'ers (Wheat and Frische) a HOF announcer (Prince) tow wives of HOF'ers (who would fake them?)

Check it out on ebay (Easy to find .. search Roberto Bob Clemente 1959)

Thanks again and I look forward to reading the boards again soon

(BTW also selling a Ty Cobb PSA 2 Green t206 Caporal)
  • I'm going on memory from a year or two ago, but I seem to remember a well known autograph guy talking about this on net54. IIRC, he said Clemente was known to have signed some signatures as Bob and they are somewhat rare, but I believe he said they bring less money because collectors want the more common signature.

Please...I'm not saying it happens a lot but when it comes to authenticating autographs no one can possibly be perfect. JSA (and PSA) have "certified" presidential auto pen signatures as "authentic", there are MANY questionable Babe Ruth autographs that have JSA letters, and we won't even begin to mention the ones they have done letters for where consensus indicates that no actual exemplars exist.

Keep in mind that any authentication done by PSA or JSA is merely an opinion, not a statement of fact.

IMO you're having trouble selling due to the asking price. A grand is high for that.
  • The 1967 topps signature is as Bob Clemente

I think, or at least hope, that 3boyz's post was sarcastic. No one is perfect and there are times when autograph opinions are wrong, regardless of the TPG.

I agree with some of the posters here. If I pulled the trigger on owning my first Clemente auto, it would have to be Roberto.

He hated being called Bob (as someone already pointed out) as it was MLB's pathetic attempt at "anglicizing" Latino baseball players.

Examples: Tony Oliva - Antonio Oliva Lopez, Bert Campaneris- Dagoberto Campaneris, my favorite Minnie Minoso - Saturnino Orrestes Arrieta

    And there's MANY more....

On a side note, it's really pathetic in modern sports when athletes "anglicize" their names in recent times. Most pathetic of all? Tony Romo - who is really Antonio Ramiro Romo...and it's not even Romo. It was changed from Romero by his parents.

Does this look right? Never mind the horrible placement. Should Topps have just placed entire "Clemente" portion of signature in window?
