anyone else having similar troubles?

My small town bank looked at me like I had leprosy when I started bringing in rolls of Sacs about 10 years ago. They took them but they didn't like it.

My Credit Union told me several years ago that they did not do any half dollars. They used to have the dollars but the last time I asked was over a year ago. They only gave them out if you took the whole brick.

<< <i>No problems here. I know it's tougher to order halves in areas without competition... by contrast, there has to be two dozen different banks within 30 miles of my house. My problem is they don't want me using their coin machines to cash it in. >>

Any national or large regional bank names you can name?

  • My issue is cashing it in.

One bank wanted to charge 25% for change. Needless to say I don't go there anymore.

My Credit Union cut me off about 2 years ago. Somebody else was abusing the system (i.e. bringing them back to them), so they shut it off for everybody. I always made it a point to redistribute mine and/or bring them back in small chunks.

I know several banks that will order halves and small-sized dollar coins here in the Northeast. I've tried ordering large-sized dollars but unfortunately, I haven't found anyone who could do it.

  • BankofA should do it, they wouldn't order me coin and I asked "why?", they said "there were fees". I said "Ok what fees?" They showed me a pamphlet that showed a few bucks per and they ended up eating their foot and I had all the coin I wanted from that day on , and never got any fees.

I get boxes of $500 halves & stacks of $2 bills quite often at Chase Bank.... location to remain anonymous but its in lower upstate NY. They'll order them for me on a phone call and they call me when they arrive.

I am starting to run into difficulties even getting cents and nickels from banks without paying 5% now because the companies like Brinks, Garda etc have dramatically increased the costs of rolled coins that they sell to banks. Right now I get most of my rolled coins from several different credit unions and filter them back out through other credit unions and largely sidestep using commercial banks for coins.

A lot of the time it is who you know in the financial institution and what they are willing to do for you - it pays to make friends in high places as I have found out.

This is very important. If possible, try to go to a location enough times and get friendly with the tellers/staff. No guarantees but oftentimes, the better a bank knows you, the more likely they'll be willing to bend over backwards for you.

I'm trying. the local CUs near me are small. They told me they rarely even order coin for themselves. image

Banks and merchants do pay fees for rolls of coins and straps of currency, as those costs go up fewer will be willing to eat those costs.

I asked the vault manager at a Federal Reserve bank what they thought of dollar coins and almost got spit on. All of their coin vault storage is jammed with them, think three Walmarts side-by-side jammed floor to ceiling with dollar coins...and that's just one of the banks.

One of my credit unions is a three branch outfit that doesn't order coin but ends up with a lot of customer wrapped rolls from merchants that bank there - which is a source of fresh material for me to go through. Just yesterday went through only $40 in nickels but ended up with a worn out Buffer and two silver war nickels.
