Did anyone see this auction?

So I have been searching for a 1980 Topps Basketball Unopened box for the past year. I checked my phone tonight and saw one being auctioned at the unbelievable price of $1100 BIN on eBay. I'm not sure how to include a link, but I cut and paste the header from my web browser for the item:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231046021004?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

I knew the box would sell quickly and that I probably wouldn't get it if I waited. Nevertheless, I contacted the seller and asked them to send or post scans of the actual box and front and backs of some of the packs. They had what appeared to be all stock photos, one lifted from DACardworld, in their listing. They also mention in the ad how they have had the box for a decade and how they paid $1300 then for it but needed to raise cash now so was going to sell for $1100.

There were too many red flags for me to buy this even though I have spent most of this year searching for a genuine, clean one of these boxes. The price fell into the "too good to be true" category as this box should never sell for less than $1400 at this point. A clean, legit box could probably command around $2000 now in my opinion. It also seems like a stretch to say that he paid $1300 for this box 10 years ago. I wasn't in the market then, but I find it hard to believe this box went for nearly that much 10 years ago.

Of course, there's the possibility that everything was good with that box in which case I missed out on one of the best unopened deals out there. I am ok with that as there are just too many inconsistencies (between using other seller's stock photos and questionable stories of the background of the box) for me to take an $1100 leap of faith.

Any opinions from the forum? Interested to hear some thoughts.

Thanks,

Steve

I have no idea or comment on the box. I will say that I always trust my gut feeling like you did in a situation like this one.

You have no straight draw, no flush draw, and even if you wind up with a pair of 7s or a pair of 2s, you're very unlikely to have the best hand.

When it comes to unopened, if there are multiple red or even yellow flags, lay off. The reality is that this stuff is just way too easy to reseal and scam people with. I wouldn't touch much of anything unopened on eBay.

Another one sold on eBay for $1500 2 months ago (BIN). I am sure he saw that

In this case, I think you did the right thing laying off. Slim odds that this is legit.
