Did we miss a bargain??

Six months ago we were all speculating on what a sealed 1979 Topps baseball wax tray case would sell for on ebay. It ended up selling for $3051.01 and I think that was delivered. Fast forward to today and BBCE is selling individual trays for $80 each (when they had some) which works out to $3840 for 48 trays (48 in a case). Now, add in a premium for a sealed case. When I revisited this thread I found it an interesting read. What seemed like a stratospheric price just 6 months ago appears to be a great bargain today. Will $80 a tray be a bargain 6 months from now? I'm curious what my fellow collectors think will happen in another 6 months.

Grote and 1954 definitely know what they're talking about.
A couple also sold on eBay in June for no more than $55.
I do not see $80 a tray being a bargain in 6 months especially when you can buy NrMt/Mt sets for less than that amount.

Last 2 sold for $65 & $75 each plus shipping. So it's not as high as some would say but it is going up.
Prices on this and other unopened material will continue to rise. I've been saying this for a while now. It's all drying up and the prices people are willing to pay has made that clear.
Buying this case, and any case at the rates they went for a year or more ago was a good buy as things are just now at another level. Bottom line is there is a limited amount of this stuff ... and eventually there will be none left. >>
I recall you suggesting that $63 a tray was too high at the time, but $80 is now the new floor for 79 trays in nice condition. For a sealed case like this one, I would price them even higher than that. Maybe not the near 50% premium over retail like you have designated with your 79 sealed cello case, but there is definitely a premium there.

It was too high then. I proved that.
And $80 is not the new floor ... just look at the recent ebay sales. >>
Proived what? That you were behind the curve on pricing and that in less than six montyhs the value would blow past what you thought was too high? I guess I find it also somewhat ironic how you lowball the value of these trays while asking for over $1,500 a box for 79 cellos, also from a sealed case. Of course, ther latter you are in the process of selling, so I guess the reason is apparent, lol..

$80 - Aug 23
$70 - Aug 5
$75 - Aug 4
This is not an $80 floor. Yet. Sure it may get there, probably will especially considering what racks are going for these days. Just give it time. >>
LOL, ok so we'll call it a $78 floor. My point is that if you look back on the thread the OP linked, you will see that in a very short period of time, the average price for a 79 tray has risen from $60 (which you said was even too high at the time) to, let's say, at least, $75. There's no reason to doubt that $80 won't be a bargain in another 6 months.

That's some creative math you got going on there, Paul, LOL..
I am very bullish on 70s cello boxes, too, but I don't see enough data to show that average retail price is anywhere near $1,200 a box, from BBCE or anywhere else. Don't forget, too, that a sale on ebay is reduced by 13% in fees, so if you were selling your sealed case OFF ebay, as you are doing on the forum, you ought to factor that reduction into your asking price. There is definitely a premium for a sealed case. The question is, how much of a premium? By your pricing of the 79 case (25K OBO), I'm guessing you believe it to be at almost 40%, which is pretty high, imo. As you know, Manny bought a 78 rack case at the National for $7.500, which was approximately 25% over retail price for the racks priced out individually, which I suppose by your premium standards was actaully quite a bargain.

<< <i>I thought cello's were the worst propsition for pulling "gem mint" cards. If this is the case, wouldn't the premium be a lot less than a rack case or a wax case? Or would there be much of a premium to begin with?
Mark >>
It seems cellos fetch must higher prices across the board. I think that has to do with the fact that cellos boxes themselves are rarer and harder to find than wax, and less to so with what's inside those packs.

^ smart take ^
That works out to $112+ per 1977 wax pack. or $4,030 for a box.
Nice premium on the wax tray.

Quite a premium for that tray but the 77 trays are extremely scarce and tough to find.
