There are things called the HLSR and Malaria/West Nile but let's not have facts get in the way of an ignorant comment.

<< <i>I and an overwhelming majority number of fans would prefer for the weather not to determine the outcome of a game, and let the team's actual SKILLS do the determining. >>

Cold weather doesn't make you drop the ball, it just makes it harder to catch it.

<< <i>It's not coincidence that the NFL has rules in place to try to assure as even a field as possible. >>

Both will be playing under the same conditions.

<< <i>It's comical that you think the players would somehow 'try harder!' if the conditions were lousy, as if these best of the best players have some reserve switch they can turn on (you probably think they need a pre-game speech to give 100% too). >>

    Reserve switch?

If you prefer to watch a game in a temperature controlled, humitity controlled environment then fine. I can't force you to watch a more interesting game.

Wusses! All those glory boy dome teams!
  • stownstown Posts: 11,321 ✭✭✭
Texans: We want an open air stadium
HLSR: We need an enclosed stadium
    Houston: We'll build a convertible
    Everyone: DEAL!

Oh, you didn't know it's a retractable roof. Shocker! My apologies to everyone for assuming he was being deliberately obtuse.

Obviously I know it's convertible. A quick glance tells you that close the dome at fifty degrees. Glory boy football playing pansies can't handle the cold!

A quick glance? So you *did* have to look it up.

I honestly don't know if I should heh or sigh.

    Good luck, bro.

Brian Burke is pretty much the definitive NFL source for advanced stats, and he did a study that breaks down winning percentage by game-time temperature. His conclusion:

"Just as we saw in the original study, dome teams playing in cold weather appear to be at a severe disadvantage. And just as we might expect, teams from warm cities struggle quite a bit as the temperature drops. The teams from moderate climates are less affected, and the teams from cold climates don't appear to be affected at all."

Giving one team an advantage over another based solely on weather is ridiculous. Doing it so a segment of fans can get a thrill is even more insane.

Let's not dumb down the argument.

You're arguing that to truely test which team is better they need to compete in a sort of vacuum (so to speak), because then it is just skills and no other contributing factors, and placing the Super Bowl in a cold weather environment adds an unnecessary factor that may distort the outcome.

    That's a fair argument.

I believe a true test of skills is competing outside a vacuum - playing in a difficult environment and overcoming those contributing factors. A team needs to be able to adjust for 12 degree weather or snow or whatever. Is the best team the one that can win in a temperature controlled environment or one that can win in any environment?

You're assuming there will be one northern open air stadium team and one dome/southern stadium team competing against each other.

Malaria? LOL now who's talking without knowledge? Being curious I looked this up and the only the recent cases of malaria cases in the US were contracted exclusively outside the US except one who contracted it via blood transfusion.

    2007 study

    "Malaria in the United States
In the United States, malaria was eliminated in the United States by the early 1950s, but about 1,500 travelers returning to the U.S. each year bring back "imported malaria." If travelers will be visiting an area with malaria transmission, they should be sure to take precautions to prevent the disease."

They built the Astrodome because that area was previously marshland 50+ years ago. So you had 100+ degree heat, 100% humidity, and essentially a huge swamp. We have a mosquito problem now and back then, it was much, much worse (thanks 'skeeter spray trucks!).

Now that you understand that, the public had legitimate fears. Easy for us to mock them in hindsight but that's just how it was.

Guess that didn't come up in your google search, huh?

    Heh.

So you're still playing in the astrodome? Hilarious. Keep grasping there pal.

I know it's a foreign concept to you but it's called an education lesson.

You claimed the Texans play in a dome/domed stadium.

    1) I showed how you were wrong in current tense.
    2) I gave context to why the Astrodome was built.

You did spent an extensive time researching, albeit the wrong things. I give you an F for comprehension.

    Class dismissed.

You claimed malaria as a reason for why the texans play in an enclosed environment, which I refuted as a bogus argument. I'm simply calling out the idiotic idea that playing the Super Bowl outdoors in bad weather somehow makes them more manly and less 'wussified'.

For the record I don't believe any nfl player is a 'wuss' no matter where they play.

I forgot, someone has to walk you through something when it's common sense to everyone else. I'll try to make this as simple and easy as possible.

We have a retractable roof now because of the HLSR and originally built a dome because of diseases associated with mosquitos, which are a direct result of our well known geography and climate.

Comprende or do I need to go sssssssssssllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr?

edited, just cuz i know his mo: we did not build the astrodome exclusively because of said diseases. even simpler: hot + humid + big bugs = not good times to play baseball.

edited again: class dismissed, again. moving on..

Bringing up malaria as a reason for the texans having a retractable roof is foolish and you're spinning your wheels trying to get out of it. That being said are the Vikings 'wusses' for playing in a dome? The saints? The lions?

  • stownstown Posts: 11,321 ✭✭✭
See, education *does* work. He insisted, incorrectly, that it was a dome and now calls it a retractable roof.

I now remember why I don't wander into the "Sports Talk" forum..

I try to discuss how weather is an interesting and exciting variable to add to the Super Bowl and now someone keeps talking about malaria and whole list of crazy ideas while slinging insults. Ridiculous.
