Cracking the psa slab and resubmit.

has anyone done this and how did it turned out for you? I recent bought a bird/johnson rookie card here at the forum. I agree with the seller, if resubmit it might get a higher grade. I am kind of tempted.

    Resubbing goes all ways.

I used to buy PSA graded cards and crack them to keep raw. Later, I decided I wanted a PSA collection. I had a 1955 Topps Hank Aaron that was a 4 and got regraded a 4. Had a 1958 Koufax that was a 4 and came back a 5. Had a '61 Yaz that was a 5 and came back under minimum size.

edit: If the seller felt that it could grade higher, he/she probably would have done so rather than just telling you it could grade higher.

That is not necessarily true. Some sellers don't like the crackout game. That involves extra money and extra time. Take me for example. If I have a card that is about one grade too low, I just state that the card appears undergraded and move on. Now if it is blatant miss, that might warrant a crackout.
  • I recently did this with an OPC Paul Coffey RC. I was sending in a batch of cards for one of Neil's (dutymon) recent group subs and an eBay purchase of a PSA 8 Coffey RC came with a nice big crack in the case (happened during shipping no doubt) so instead of sending it in for a re-holder I cracked it to add to the batch. That was a rookie mistake on my part as I was impatient and didn't know how cheap a reholder was at the time. Got the sub results and the Card dropped to a 7. It sucked but I learned a few good lessons in doing so. Patience and a quick check on the net would have saved me the embarrassment.
  • I've barely done it but did manage to get a 69' Fingers RC back as an 8 after it had brought a 6 the first time. I don't do it unless I know a card well enough that I am certain it was under-graded. If I only "think" it was then I don't send it in because I'm always afraid there is a very small surface defect that I missed before submitting that I can't see/feel through the glass.

I have a similar situation with a BGS 10/10. Mine is a crack/chip on the outer edge of the holder clearly not damaging the card or compromising the integrity of the holder, just ugly.

You never said what the current grade is. If you are a gambler, go for it. But, it is truly a crapshoot. Sometimes the candy, sometimes the wrapper. I've had some come back the same which is a good argument for their consistency in grading. I also had a 5mc come back a 6mc. But, my worst experience was cracking an Aaron rc in a 5 that looked more like a 6. Came back ALT. Needless to say, I took a bath on that one. You just never know. image
  • Really depends on your goals for re-grading.

I've done MANY crackouts because I like raw cards, and a few resubs.
The first resub I did purely as a test. I wasn't doing this to increase the
value but more as a test to see how variable individual graders can be.
    The answer is "they are".

Cracked out five lower-value PSA 9 cards from the 80s that I thought
looked perfect. Three came back PSA 9, one was 8.5, and one got the
    upgrade to PSA 10.

The grading standards are pretty well-defined up through PSA 9,
but PSA 10 is very subjective and on "any given day" the grader
may or may not see fit to give you the 10.

    On higher-value cards I personally wouldn't resub anything above a PSA 7,
but that jump from 7 to 8 can be huge $$$-wise. So it can defnitely
be worth the $6 investment to take a shot at it.

But overall it's a crapshoot as others have said so just be prepared for disappointment.

Here is the card I was referring to. What do you guys think? Resubmit or just keep it as a psa 7?

Tilt and centering on both sides will keep it a 7.

I would leave it be, the centering and tilt is why its a 7 and not higher.

I would crack and sub. I think the front is nice enough (no black printer mark) and not as tilted as back to get a higher grade. I can easily see this as an 7.5 to 8 on a good day. I don't think you have to worry about it coming back a 6 unless the "spots" in the background of Magic or between the Bird & Dr J panels are bad in person.

Of course I like to play the crack out game and am a glutton for punishment.

It's a 7, not going any higher than that. Save your money.

There are plenty of situations where I advocate crack and submit but this isn't one of them. It's a nice 7 and your chance of going up to 8 isn't worth the risk of damaging the card. Sell as a high end 7.
  • You won't get anything less than a 7 so go for it I say. I don't think it would be out of place in an 8 holder either from what I can see. Good luck.

the card is accurately graded. no better. not ever.

Marc. The centering says it will NEVER be an 8. This was an easy grade.

I've cracked about nine Psa 10 Jordan cards, bought real cheap and going to submit to bgs. Only accidentally destroyed one lol.

I say crack and submit to bvg!

    I agree
  • Bobby, I'm surprised by your statement. A card with that kind of centering could easily be in an 8 holder. Here's a prime example of a card that I recently saw that got a 10 and the centering was butchered. I'd bet anything that no one on here would of said this card would had been given the grade of a 10 but PSA deemed it a 10, so i stand by my statement and say that his card would not look out of place in an 8 holder according to PSA standards. Here I am even showing an example to back it up so its very possible indeed.

If it were me i would defintely take the risk and see what happens. You'll never know unless you give it a shot. I need to take my own advice as there are a few cards in my collection that i need to do this with. A little off topic , but that is one ugly clemens..how the heck did that get in a 10 holder? I've bought a lot of nice cards in the past from 4 sharp corners but lately i see a lot of this from them...ive submitted better looking cards in the past and gotten 9s and minsize lol..maybe its the volume of cards they submit?

UGGGG!!! That Clemens brings to mind that ugly PSA 10 Art Shell rookie!!! Visit across the street if you need more clarification!

    bliss.
  • And Orlando gets peeved when we complain about 4SC getting props.

That Clemens card is a perfect example of the essential unfairness of TPG at the high end.
