86 Topps Box Bottoms

How tough are these to get in a 10, really? I know of at least two people who were thinking of hitting the BIN on this 1/1 at $199, but I got to thinking....Surely there are tons of unopened boxes of this stuff sitting around where the box bottoms are still in gem-mintish condition...Is the real problem here that people just don't know how to cut the box bottoms the right way? The master set registry folks are still craving these oddballs in 10...I'm just very surprised there is still such low pops of cards like this.

    My opinion...

The Topps box bottoms are more difficult than the OPC!

I would gladly pay high $$$ for any of the box bottom Schmidt singles and/or panels that I need as upgrades.

Even from a fresh case, there is a good chance of wrinkles somewhere on the box bottom, and surface issues abound on box bottom panels. It's no surprise or secret that many of the high-grade OPC panels that have surfaced, for example, were unfolded, undistributed examples. There is perhaps some lunacy to ponying up for a 10 compared to a 9....but check out the pop. report for some of these beasts and let me know your opinion.

1988 Topps is perhaps one of the most overproduced sets of all time....

However, look at the population report for 1988 Topps Box Panels

Less than 30 full panels graded, with the key one being the Schmidt / Ryan / Henderson panel. 23 of those panels have been graded, with only 2 grading out at PSA 6 EX-MT, and none grading higher.

I'll pay $100- for a PSA 8 panel. I'm sure many may pay more. PSA 9 or PSA 10 panel? Who's to guess.

If they are that easy to find, buy a case, submit some, and reap your lottery awards. There's many willing buyers of high grade panels. My guess? You can't find them in top grade, even case fresh.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I think a full panel 8 would go $200+ easy with the Ryan collectors

Agreed. I've hit 3 wax cases in the past year and my best hit was a Brett 9. I can't believe that Murph is still available.

The only future issue I see is if a case of undistributed (folded) Topps boxes surfaces. Then it's just a matter of getting them in the hands of someone who knows how to cut them and pop reports will go through the roof. The reason OPC is easier to find than Topps is because there's been a find of undistributed OPC boxes (Hi Tom! image). Because the wax packs are sure as heck MUCH tougher to find than Topps.

Of course, that's all speculation that a find of even a single case occurs. But with these cards reaching decent dollars I suspect it's just a matter of time before people start actively looking for them and a case or two surfaces. I have to imagine there's at least a case of undistributed Topps boxes out there and a single case is really all it will take.

But the stuff that actually got distributed? Forget about it. Wrinkles and surface scratches galore. Good luck to those of you still hunting.

    RC,
I've seen wrapper rolls and undistributed Donruss wax but never Topps. I agree that the distributed is a crapshoot. Even from sealed cases you have scratches and wrinkles like you mentioned just from sitting dormant and settling over time. Seems like Tom and 9999rbush have had some good luck with the bottoms. Other than an 86 Topps Brett 9, I have yielded an 85 Topps Payton in an 8. It sold for quite a bit more than I expected several years ago. I have an 88 Score Ripken at PSA now.

    Thanks,
