A well-equipped, easily visible sitting area is always a good idea at a coin show.

No need to knock the fine city of Chicago though.

"TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE"? Somewhat inconvenient sounds more like it.

Of course "I'll sell whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want" is a clarion call towards maintaining individual liberties. But then Ted Nugent sounds like this to those not yet ready for Ayn Rand. Many teenage boys have grown out of this, but I applaud your commitment to the free market. image

Colonel J - As always I love the way you put things.image

Maybe I did over react, but tables in the food are a definite need.

In hindsight I should have complained at the show and then would have found out about the "hidden" tables.

I "WILL" inquire before the next ANA.image

you can't do business with an other collector at the event venue!

you can do business say at the fast food store around the conner !

Not at the event venue... The dealers pay for the renting of the hall and the security and those other nice things at coin shows (exibits, ect.)

I will readily agree that mobile assistance for those with some disability (no doctor's note required) is called for. This is done at FUN, whose local members have contacts with companies which rent them out. A few years back, I made such arrangements through the FUN organizers for Steve Leber, whom some of you will recall. Easy as pie. Surely ANA could set something similar up through local/regional organizations.

No knock on the OP. He's not the only one here who goes over the top occasionally. image

Pat - My main complaint was that there was no place to relax visit and eat.

As far as dealing with other collectors.....There is "NO" way I am going outside around the corner to make a deal with another collector.

Come on ..... that's insane! AS long as you don't do it in the dealer table area I see no problem.

In this case, with no break area, I had to do a deal in the dealer area at an empty table. I didn't like this, buy hey "no tables" in break area.

Maybe you don't. But once you have to start writing checks to cover the cost of other people doing business, you might begin to see it.

A while back, I asked a major show (FUN, Long Beach, Baltimore- I don't remember) about this very scenario (collectors doing business on the show floor) and was told that it was not allowed.

Of course they're going to say that. Ask a policeman if it's okay to go 1 MPH over the speed limit and you'll get the same answer. This rule is very difficult to enforce if two collector friends are discrete and do the sale or trade away from the bourse area.

The dealers pay for the security, lights, venue etc.
It is not a "swap meet".
Only dealers should deal....they pay, they play.
Collector's need to take it somewhere else.
You can't do whatever, whenever and whereever you want.
Better get over that attitude fast.

If that's their policy, why shouldn't they say it?

You're right, of course. People intent on violating any number of rules or policies can get away with it by being careful.

Not only is it not allowed, it will flat out get you booted out of some shows in fact... and I agree wholeheartedly. Dealers who actually paid for tables should be doing business-and not getting it sniped away from them by those not willing to pay up for a spot themselves. As to the rest... it's a coin show. If eating is more important to you then suggest hitting a restaurant before or after the show.

Edit to add: this is the same mindset exhibited by those who think it's OK to snipe deals away from the local guy in his parking lot- or in his shop while he's dealing with someone else.

It is true that it's not good to not accommodate those who patronize the show. In this respect, it's not very thoughtful on the part of organizers to not consider our aged brethren. It was not my intent to joke or hurt anyone over the lack of these accommodations, so it's necessary to make this point in addressing the primary concern.

Dealers pay for tables on the floor.....the break area is neutral territory.

Besides, I don't think my $100 deal hurt anybodies business.image

According to the response to my inquiry (noted above), the break area was not to be used for buying/selling. Of course, it's always possible they just meant "not to be used by me" and they'd be fine with you doing business there.

    Great analogy!
Basically the same reasoning for those who cannot see why you should not sell privately at the ANA or other similar venues.
Go to your local coin club meeting, B&M, street corner or wherever.
    Or, start your own show!
    JMHO as always.
    PS...I am not a dealer.

I have to agree with the OP.

I did not go to the ANA Convention, but I was at the National Sports Collectors' Convention at the Stephens Convention Center two weeks before the ANA, and the situation was identical. Absolutely no place to sit down either to eat or just relax your legs and back. At least for me, it's pretty darn near impossible to try to carry food and a drink while also carrying a bag or other item containing show purchases or items you brought with you for either sale or trade.

There also were several times over my four days at the show where I literally thought I was going to drop due to my leg and back issues. I ended up going to the cafeteria opposite the main entrance (on the Bryn Mawr Ave side), to sit for a while and regain some energy.

There were plenty of tables and chairs in the "Rest Stop Area".
I did find it , but it was like I was in the back storage area of the convention center. NOT very inviting.

It was just very hidden and had security at the curtain entrance. I did not want to go back there again.
