Is Chipper Jones a first ballot Hall of Famer?

With all the talk on here recently of "is so and so a hall of famer?", I started looking through my collection because I hadn't done so in many years, specifically a lot of the '80's and 90's stuff since I really hadn't looked at that stuff in forever. I pulled a lot of Chipper cards, Griffey, Maddux, Glavine, Randy Johnson, Guerrero, Bagwell, and a lot of the "roid" guys (Clemens, Bonds, Palmeiro, McGwire). Griffey is a shoe in, as well as Maddux, Glavine and Randy Johnson. I always assumed Chipper was a lock too, but I read an article a while back where people were debating whether he was first ballot or not. His statistics stacked up against other hall of famers would definitely put him in the first time and the fact he hasn't been associated with roids. What do you guys think? Also, who else from that era that isn't assiciated with drugs should be in?

yes, 1st ballot hof. Especially, when you compare his numbers to other 3rd baseman.
I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.

Given that his career is over and the stats are complete, I say yes. Compared to other 3rd basemen, he is one of the all-time greats for that position.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

  • It did take Eddie Mathews five tries and he was by far the best third baseman in history at the time. Chipper is probably only fifth, but still very close to Boggs who had 90% of the vote
  • Ahhhhh yea!!!!! First ballot for sure!

    Yes AINEC.

    .303 BA, 468 HR, 1623 RBI, .401 OBP, .529 SLG, 85.2 WAR, 8 time all star, MVP

Only Schmidt and Matthews have better stats at third, and I think theres a debate to be had there.

I can't stand the Braves, and I'll admit that Chipper is THE third baseman of this generation.

Definitely a no-brainer. 8 straight 100 RBI seasons, a World Series ring, an MVP, a batting title, career .303 average, 468 HRs, 2000 games at 3B alone. Yeah, a clear first ballot guy.

Warms my heart to see the card community in general have such a consensus opinion about Chipper. Long gone are the days when I have to "keyboard battle" with folks because I'm a Braves homer and he was underappreciated.

I'm a Thomas collector, but a Braves fan. As such, I collect Maddux and Chipper to a much lesser extent. All 3 are 1st ballot guys in my eyes.
