Need opinions on soccer card (Ronaldo RC) pricing/value. Please help.

I have been reading the soccer card thread on the forum with some interest. I have a chance to buy this card. I am more of a basketball collector but I am a fan of all sports. Not sure what the current market value is for soccer cards. I know this is a big card. I need some help in knowing if I am getting a good price on this card. Seller's asking price is right at $500. Can some of you give me an idea of what this is worth? I am looking for as many opinions as possible. Thanks for your help.

I think 500 is fair. I think a 9 sold for around 300 and raw ones sell for about 100-125. Soccer cards seem to be selling very well lately. I'm not sure if its a bubble or the beginning. The Messi mega cracks rookie peaked I think around 1000 a few months ago. Once European sellers realized the prices US customers were paying they became more available on eBay. It's very tough to say with these foreign issues. I don't really know if the product is really limited or if its the 1990 pro set of Europe and dealers are sitting tons of unopened cases. I do think prices will continue to climb through the 2014 World Cup at least though

Purely a guess on my part, but I'm betting the card was simultaneously listed on the seller's web-based soccer card site (they launched a site several months ago) as well as on ebay, and it sold first on ebay before selling on the site so it was taken down from there.

Yes, it is the same card from the just ended eBay auction. I actually bid on that auction and lost. The seller must have had the winning bidder back out because I received a second chance offer through eBay for the card. I was all set to go for the card as I had just sold some cards and I had just the right amount to cover it in my PayPal. After losing this auction I drained that PayPal balance on an unopened box I saw on eBayimage Now I would be spending non-card (and hence more real) money on this card. I have until the 18th to decide if I still want it at the price I bid on and that's why I am asking opinions on the card now. Based on the most recent sale of a BGS 9 at $300, a PSA 10 at $500 sounds reasonable. I do like collecting high grade RC's of stars/HOF's and he definitely qualifies as a star. I just don't know enough about soccer cards to know if this card is really rare and can hold the $500 price tag. So do you all think this card has peaked and will remain stable, has peaked and will drop or will continue to rise? Again, thanks for your input.

    Stick to what you know.

I always get suspicious on second chance offers. Ill let the board detectives determine if there is something fishy going on or not. Personally I would search European sites and buy it raw for a fraction of the cost. That being said I don't think 500 is unreasonable

Like you've said in the past several times, and I completely agree with you from all my experiences, European sites yield some interesting and tough cards that you won't find on the USA version of ebay, but the condition of the items is a crap shoot. They'll describe something with major paper loss on back as gem mint, and then have something as good/decent that turns out to be a 10. Much of the time you can't really get the true condition through translation and just have to take a chance and see it for yourself. Might take purchasing a few of the same item before you find a good one, but there are certainly bargains to be had that way too.

Agree with all this. I almost never go for second chance offers as I'm a born skeptic. I also agree with the poster that said stick with what you know.

So I decided to pass on the second chance offer. I followed some advice and stuck with what I know, so I ended up buying an Elgin Baylor RC instead. It's a PSA 6 and I will have to upgrade to a PSA 7 (or better) someday but for now it's nice to have the RC of an all-timer in the sport I love. That said, I am interested in soccer cards too and I am looking to learn more about them before I actually start buying.

My new question is what makes one card out of the Panini set more valuable than another. For instance, a quick search on eBay reveals Messi has no less than 4 cards in the 2004 set (which appears to be his RC year) #'s 35, 62, 71 and 89. Of the four #71 seems to be substantially more valuable than the others. What is the reason behind this? Interested to hear the answer.

Follow up question: Are the 2003 Mega Cracks #9 Ronaldo and 2004 Mega Cracks #71 Messi considered to be their "best" or truest RC's?

I can't definitively answer your question as I'm not very familiar with soccer cards, but I do follow the sport itself. Messi started playing for the "full" Barcelona squad in 2004 as well as the Argentina U-20 team... previously he was in the Barcelona reserve squad, so the 2004 card would seem to be his legit rookie card. Cristiano Ronaldo started playing for Sporting Lisbon during the 02-03 season... so I'm not sure if there would be a 2002 card out there at all? Again, this is due to my lack of knowledge with soccer cards, sorry.

edit -- He only played one full season w/ Sporting before moving to Manchester United, so to see a card w/ him in a Sporting kit probably means that is his rookie card. (Educated guess)

There are more than 4 different true RC's for Messi from 2004, but not all have been graded by PSA yet. Here are the seven different ones I have:

2004 Mundi Cromo Fichas 617 Lionel Messi RC
2004 Mundi Cromo Top Liga - Matte 195 Francisco J. Munoz Llompart/Lionel Messi RC/Daniel Cancela Rodriguez/Borja Fernandez Fernandez
2004 Mundi Cromo Top Liga - Shiny 195 Francisco J. Munoz Llompart/Lionel Messi RC/Daniel Cancela Rodriguez/Borja Fernandez Fernandez
2004 Panini Este Stickers - Lionel Messi RC
    2004 Panini Mega Cracks 71
2004 Panini Mega Cracks - Barca Campio 62
2004 Panini Mega Cracks - Barca Campio - Autograf 89

The Mega Cracks #71 is definitely the premier one to own. The second best one is the Este Stickers, which is the hardest to find in top condition. The most common one to find is the Mundi Cromo Fichas 617.
