1952 Topps Mantle-PSA 8-Really

So, as some of you know, I am on the road quite a bit throughout the southwest and up north a bit. As usual, I look up local card shops in search of my vintage wants/needs for sets. I walk into a shop in Oklahoma City and hit it off pretty good with this new store owner. On day two, he shares an email he recieved after he took a phone call from a guy who claimed he was from SC. The area code was from a phone in OK, but the accent suggested he was from the south. This guy, claims he has cards for sell and that he would honor bank notes or a secure form of payment for about a dozen cards. I look at the scans and see a 64 Mays, PSA 4, a few tuff short prints from the 50's Topp sets in high grades. There are some very sweet Redman William's and Snider in PSA 9 and then he pops the two big ones, a Dandee and 52 Topps Mantle. I ask for a picture of this 52 card and snap it with my cell phone. I can't post it as I am on the road, but it looks real to my untrained eyes. The guy seemed so shady, and the fact that he requested money upfront smells of a scam. Anyway, the card cert # is 02108511. Is there anyway to tell if this is a good number or if it is a fake? The first thing I thought of was that this card is stolen or is counterfeit. I can email this to any of you detective guys who has an interest in this kind of thing. You just don't see theese popping up all the time. My biggest concern is that it's stolen.

    yes you do. image
  • The cert number is legit for a 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 8.

That said, much more research will be needed, especially since your spidey sense in tingling, to determine if the label, case, and card have not been compromised or forged in some way.

    Good Luck.

I was at a card show in Tulsa one day and a guy from Oklahoma came walking in with a PSA 8 Mantle but the card was fake in a legit holder. He was a pretty shady guy and I could tell he was a little uncomfortable showing the card. Not sure if this is the same guy but be careful.

Sounds like a stereotypical Craigslist-ish scam, to be honest...

That's funny because a PSA 9 Red Man Ted Williams card doesn't even exist. And the only PSA 9 Red Man Duke Snider card is in the #1 1955 Red Man Registry set.
