Need Opinions for 1st Sub (pics included)

Hey Guys -
I'm starting to put together my first sub. This sub is all baseball. I've narrowed down the group a bit and I'd appreciate any opinions on what you think should get slabbed. Not sure the scans tell the best story, but hope they'll work for the exercise. Would like to know which 5-15 you'd send, and a ballpark grade if you don't mind.

  • I'd send the 62's and the 68's for starters. 54 mays looks good as does the 56 mantle and how about that 71 Ryan! That looks like an 8+ at least! Other than that they are 4's 5's with maybe a couple 6's

Agree with Bobby. I'd also send in the 52 Feller (...just because I love that card. image ) and the Hodges. The 62s look good enough to chance with as well. Hard to tell on the scans, though.

That 71 Ryan looks EXMT to me. Centering, top right corner as well as the bottom/right edge chipping probably seals this card's fate. You might get a 7 on a really good day.

First off nice cards, this would be my order of top 15.
    1. '56 Mantle
    2. '54 Mays
    3. '56 Williams
    4. '55 Robinson
    5. '56 Koufax
    6. '56 Mays
    7. '56 Aaron
    8. '57 Aaron
    9. '55 Kaline
10.'62 Clemente (Print line hurts it but nice)
    11.'58 Mays
    12.'62 Musial
    13.'64 Mays
    14.'71 Ryan
    15.'52 Hodges
    Also Ran '57 Dodgers Sluggers

What you send in kind of has to do with what you plan on doing with them. If you are selling them, then send them all in. If you are collecting raw sets, then keep most of them as is, and only send in the best looking and highest value ones. Either way I'd do two things with them:
    1. take them out of the card savers and check the surface of each, a few look dirty, and may have old wax on them, especially 65 Gibson, 59 F. Robinson, and the 57 Aaron. If so rubbing with a soft cloth, or pantyhose, will clean the wax off, just do it on a hard, even surface, and take real care near the edges and corners so you don't damage them.
    2. declare honest values for the one that you do send in so it doesn't cost you a fortune in return shipping and insurance. Don't use an PSA 8 value for a card that will grade in the 5-6 range.

first off nice cards, would love to have some of them myself.

with most having rounded corners i wouldnt expect anything more than a PSA 5 on nearly all of them. more than like 4's at best for the 50's vintage cards. the 60's are a little better condition wise but not much. you best looking cards are cards that are graded hard due to the background color the 71 Ryan and 75 Brett. Even those have some issuse the centering on the Brett will knock it down as will the edges and maybe the top left and lower right corners. the ryan appears to have some white at the edges and is a little off center as well. those might get you a 7 but maybe not.

I wouldn't send the '70 Seaver for grading.
