Actually, whoever buys them will own them until someone crazier about AU58+ CAC super gold shiny sticker monster but not really quite Unc. Lincolns decides they want to buy it for even more.
While I am in complete agreement with the opinions thus far expressed - there are under bidders who seem to be willing to shell it out also
When I was building my barber half EM set, I saw only one 1905-0 AU come for sale in 3+ years - a spotted and ugly 50 which I bought (while not so much a plastic purchase at the time as the spots grew in after the purchase and the sellers images made the coin appear nicer than it really was) for $1100 and eventually sold at a small profit. The recent heritage sale had an ugly (IMO) 1905-0 half in 53 side by side with an 05-0/64. Both PCGS. The 64 appeared wholesome and appealing from the image (couldn't see in hand), the coins closed $200 apart. To me that is equally, if not even more curious? (Politically correct?)
Really? I understand where you are coming from as I thought a bit of the same initially but then I thought a little more...At this point who the heck is going to see this and say to themselves "Wow, what a great deal, I need to go start bidding on this because it is soooo cheap!" Based on this, I took the post at face value, to discuss the shock and not to promote bids.

I see how it could function that way, sure. I see how a lot of people, not you necessarily, really enjoy trying to police the forums and it is a bit tiresome. There are rules here that can be applied with an iron fist, absolutely...but they aren't which is probably a good thing. I think we have to look more to the spirit of the rules, step very carefully and follow them the best we can as a community. If Teletrade starts posting like this every week then we have a big problem and the appropriate people will handle it, not us. But with 40 posts in 2.5 years, some being on the BST I believe and some on the US Coin forum answering questions about the auction house, I really do not believe we have a major problem on our hands given the SHOCKING nature of the post. If you feel it needs immediate attention, rather than acting as a forum police officer and posting about it, it would be more productive to go ahead and send a PM to Sportsmoderator1, HRH, DonWillis etc. I won't do this but you can feel free to. I just do not a reason to at this point. All the best.

Remember it takes two bidiots to tango so there is a underbidiot breathing along the heels of the main.
Both are just buying a label numbers as neither coin is really exciting as a super slider as heck the reverse die state on the 17-D is the worst I've ever seen for this date.
Edited to add: OK the 14-S looks kinda nice but it's still just a $250 coin.
What these AU58+ guys need to realize is there's 25 years worth of AU58 holder coins out there that on any give day might be far nicer then what's been given a recent +.

<< <i>That's what collecting is about... Being passionate about your set/coins and hopefully fortunate enough to support it!

Being passionate is one thing. Paying 20X to 50X for packaging is another story entirely. I can't call this insane as it's an order of magnitude beyond that. The bottom line is that all the hundreds of MS61-MS62 coins out there of slightly better dates can be placed in your pants pocket for a few months to years to reduce the grade to AU58. In comparison Beanie Babies make sense. Not quite to the tulip stage yet....but working on it.
<< <i>Makes no sense to me to pay such ridiculous prices for the 58+ grade. Interesting that so many bidders disagree with me. >>
I seriously doubt that anybody is even bidding.
For Teletrade to stoop to this level of promoting their auctions only goes to show how seriously in trouble Teletrade actually is.
You never see Ian on here wanting folks to "L@@K" at the current bid level of a Great Collections listing. For that matter, you never see the folks at Heritage, who have ids, come on here and tout the bidding of one of their listings either.
But, if you folks don't mind, I expect that ole Corey will come on just about every week promoting one or two of his company's listing. Then, maybe it'll be every day or so. Then it'll be nothing but "Hey, L@@K at this!" Anything to get folks over to the site just to look around.
Now, if someone that actually participated in the Everyman's Registry had posted the silliness of the price on the two coins, there would be no problem. But, imagine the outcry if an eBay seller were to post the bidding activity or even a ridiculous Buy It Now price, on one of their own listings?
And this is different "In what way?"

"If it's not fun, it's not worth it." - KeyMan64 Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
I honestly think this is intriguing...I have worked with these Everyman collectors in the past and I can certainly respect how hard it is to find some of these coins. I really wanted this post to be about how the Registry Sets have in a way transformed how some collectors approach collecting and purchasing coins less about my intentions of how to Spam the message boards.
Like I said; I think this is interesting to watch as we opened these coins at $220 and $45.
Normally I would view a post like this as somewhat spammy. However, if those two lots really did open at $220 and $45, then I find that newsworthy as an interesting statement on part of the hobby right now.
That's just insane considering what it would buy and for how long and I don't mean coins. The 14s is worth only $315. That buyer will be the end user for sure.
I have never cared nor been a fan of the registry craze. I am sure its a big profit bonanza to the dealers who have the material to cater to it. I can just see that seller planning his upcoming strip club trips.....and laughing at the stupidity of that buyer.
You need to be careful with Teletrade. The opening bid is from the seller and a lot of the time I see these at or above retail. With the 17.5% fee it can get expensive. Just take what your willing to pay for the coin like if it was a show and divide by 1.175 and this should be your max bid. I may track 20 items in a TTR auction and when its over I notice about 35-50% were unsold. This is bc the seller had too high an opening bid to get any bids on the item.
I really wanted this post to be about how the Registry Sets have in a way transformed how some collectors approach collecting and purchasing coins less about my intentions of how to Spam the message boards.
that would be a good topic of discussion: if that is what you wanted, why didn't you just form a question based on that point?? you have to admit, with a forum ID of Teletrade linking auctions from that venue only invites suspicion as to the reason. what would you think of having a discussion about how Teletrade has dwindled over the past few years to a point where the venue is almost irrelevant?? during my time as a member with this forum Teletrade was always disliked by some and ignored by many others, but it seemed a reasonable place to sell some coins and search for Varieties or the proverbial LowHangingfruit that could be found. presently, there is less offered in the once-a-week sale than used to be seen on a slow Monday and, though I hate to say it, not much even worth searching through.
is Teletrade in trouble of going out of business in the near future??
<< <i>Normally I would view a post like this as somewhat spammy. However, if those two lots really did open at $220 and $45, then I find that newsworthy as an interesting statement on part of the hobby right now. >>

MFH, I've at times spent near MS64 monies on a AU64 but the spread has never been anything that even remotely approaches 55 times PCGS values.

FWIW, I am very disturbed that an AU-58+ should command such a premium, especially in a sight-unseen transaction. I am not at all disturbed that it was posted here by Teletrade.
I don't know if the auction is real or not, but now PCGS will be flooded with AU58+ grading attempts. The whole thing is silly, kinda like the lowball registry-people actually wearing down coins on purpose for the sake of trying to get the lowest grade. Everyman registry? I think that "everyman" would more easily be able to afford a MS63 or MS64 coin as this insanity rages on. As usual, the average everyday collector gets left out.

I see this as spam. I think it should have been posted on the BST Forum where it would likely have received a fair amount of exposure and comment. It would have been fair game for this forum if the coins were already sold.
And I'll also predict that both coins will go unsold. (Happens all the time to coins I typically track and have high prices)

Does the "potted plant" still bid on TT auctions?
<< <i>I view it as pure, unadulterated SPAM, too. However, this is all TeleTrade ever seems to contribute to these boards, in my opinion, so I have come to expect a degradation of the boards when TeleTrade posts. >>
Boldly stated and right on the $$. But SPAM seems to be ok with the mods these days.
<< <i>I really wanted this post to be about how the Registry Sets have in a way transformed how some collectors approach collecting and purchasing coins less about my intentions of how to Spam the message boards.
that would be a good topic of discussion: if that is what you wanted, why didn't you just form a question based on that point?? you have to admit, with a forum ID of Teletrade linking auctions from that venue only invites suspicion as to the reason. what would you think of having a discussion about how Teletrade has dwindled over the past few years to a point where the venue is almost irrelevant?? during my time as a member with this forum Teletrade was always disliked by some and ignored by many others, but it seemed a reasonable place to sell some coins and search for Varieties or the proverbial LowHangingfruit that could be found. presently, there is less offered in the once-a-week sale than used to be seen on a slow Monday and, though I hate to say it, not much even worth searching through.
is Teletrade in trouble of going out of business in the near future?? >>
How many members do you think there are here who DON'T KNOW about TeleTrade?

And I'll also predict that both coins will go unsold. (Happens all the time to coins I typically track and have high prices)
