2013 National Pick Ups

There have been some great postings so far about this year's national. I had an absolutely fantastic time hanging out with CU friends, enjoying some deep dish pizza, and ripping some cheap wax. One of the best parts about national is catching up with friends who live all over the country, talking cards and life in general, and relaxing. I had so much fun this year, and it was great to meet a lot of new people in person.

I had some bumpage and new pickups, all of which I'm super excited about. I hope you don't mind my sharing as I am really excited about all of these pickups.

First, I've been looking for both of these cards in high grade for quite some time. I'm a huge Rose and Reggie fan, and I really like the 71 topps set. High graded cards in this set are so visually appealing in my opinion. And these two are both low pops and hardly ever surface for sale, so I was really happy to pick them up.

The Rose:

The Reggie:

Next, my E98 Wagner PSA 8.5 bumped to an SGC 96 Mint. I had several lengthy conversations with Joe about this one which I won't go into, but I'm thrilled with the card in its current holder.

Next, I had sold my previous 52 Mantle some time back, and had been looking for another. This one caught my eye because of its uniqueness. I'm not an auto guy, but this one I just had to have. I was very close to passing on it but am so glad I didn't.

Finally, besides hanging out with friends, another key reason for attending the national was to finalize the transaction for this beauty with Heritage. I think the action shot on this card is really cool. The color and image nearly jumps out of the holder. Not a huge fan of the plastic inside the holder as it creates a glare in the picture, but I'm not really complaining.

Great seeing you guys (you know who you are), and am very much looking forward to next year in Cleveland!

Congratulations on the Wagner bump that is fantastic!

I feel lucky I got to handle a few of these cards and check them out in person.

It was great to meet you and I think the cab ride back to the hotels may go down as the most memorable cab ride I have ever had! image

Dan, great spending time with you as always. I just wish there was more time in the day.

I agree those 1971 cards are sharp. One of the reasons I keep putting that set off is because I'd be looking for cards like that, lol.

Great job on the bumpage on old Hans and the Ty Cobb even looks better in person. Seems like you were holding out on me with that Mantle, unless of course you got it on Sunday.

Looking forward to seeing you in Cleveland next year. Btw, Chuck says hi. image

Awesome stuff! Those '71s are sick and the E98s are overwhelming. I won't even comment on the Mantle. Disgustingly incredible additions... And next time, you better say, "Hello."
  • Agreed. The 71's are out of the park. Really like that Reggie card.

Awesome stuff Dan. You should be extremely proud of those. The E98's are simply outstanding. Congrats.

OMG! Amazing Dan ... as a MICK fan and a collector of the '52 set in autographed form ... all I can say is WOW! That's one I will never be able to afford. Maybe I can print it out in color and put it in my set? LOL

ALL of those cards are just crazy! ENJOY!

Edited to add: Did you ever notice how you signed that last PM you sent to me?
    STAY HEALTHY!

Thunderdan rocks!! Great Mantle and Ty, but what makes me jealous is the deep dish pizza image. My favorite part of that area of the Country

In all seriousness, sweet cards Dan

Congrats, Dan. Those are some show-stoppers! It still blows my mind to see e98's in mint condition like that.

  • Dan,
It was fun watching you rip those packs at the BBCE booth. As for those cards all I can say is WOW! I'm already starting to plan the trip to Cleveland.

All I can say is the scans do not do the cards justice. Looking at them in hand is beyond belief.

BTW Dan, I hate you for getting that Rose.................LOL.

Great job buddy. It is hard to top the quality of those cards. Can't wait to meet up next year in Cleveland.

Danny.... WOW!! Congrats on all of those pickups as well as the Wagner bump. The Mantle is a stellar card and I'm glad you didn't pass on it. Even though Cleveland is still only 50 weeks away I'm already getting pump for it.

Ok that's it...I quit...I'm taking my peanuts home and not playing anymore. Awesome job how did I miss out on getting to hold these jewels? Nice talking with you Dan hope to see you next year.

Yeah, I DO mind! Quit bumping the eBay threads down the page with your petty little pick ups! image

Those E98 cards are just insane... it boggles the mind how these survived in such amazing condition for over 100 years. Did you even CONSIDER taking the "Black Swamp Find" off the flips at the urging of our resident 1979 Topps/pre-war expert? image

Oh... and that Mantle isn't too shabby either. I'm sure there are a few out there, but I question how many of them have better eye appeal than that one.

Congrats on the monster pick ups and the bump! image

It is awesome to see pack-fresh 71's, with no chipping. I could look at those forever.

If I may ask a silly question: what is the short-version story behind the black swamp find?

Note: I just read the PSA article on this find. It is truly amazing.

    Dan,

You need to warn people before they click on this thread. BLAZERS!

Congratulations on all of your pick ups. Hopefully, sometime at one of the future nationals, I will be able to spend more time with you and the other guys.
