Beware it looks like another high dollar switch. >>
This card was just sold by Mile High on 6/7/2013. Below is the scan from their auction. The frosting and the bar code are identical to the ebay listing. That bar code doesn't look right. I was unable to scan it.
6/7/13 Mile High:
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all "right-thinking" people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
Does that mean the Ebay auction is a legit card? >>
Mile High also sold that same card/cert# on 2/1/2013.
This same cert # sold on 5/30/2008 but has a completely different flip and bar code. So to answer your question correctly, you'd have to make a determination whether the Mile High card was real or the Goodwin card was real.

Tampered holder, wrong spacing on the flip (the flip itself appears real but erased with new text added). >>
Maurice do the auction houses not inspect the items they are selling before listing them and do they stand behind the item if it is indeed either fake or tampered with?

Do you believe that the card itself (from the Mile High) is fake then? Authenticity and/or alterations aside, I think the card inside the holder looks pretty nice...The 9 might be a stretch using current grading standards, but I've seen worse cards in 9 holders. Scary, if you ask me.
Based on the scan of the back of the card (from the Mile High auction), I could see the card being returned from PSA as having Evidence of Trim. That said, I'd be anxious to find out if the card is authentic or not. It's funny to read the Mile High description of the card. Nowhere does it say anything about a suspect holder.
edited to add a question: Does anyone know if the scans provided to PSA to resolve registry conflicts are reviewed for authenticity/integrity purposes? I'd imagine someone was pretty upset when he/she went to add this card to the registry (assuming that happened).

In the case of dueling certs, PSA will request scans from both owners to review. Eventually, they'll request both cards be sent in to the Ops Manager for review/evaluation and one owner will get bad news. At that point its up to the losing owner to pull the auction house into the problem to initiate some type of resolution.

The "Mile High" looks short left to right. That said a fake flip must have been printed with PSA 8 certification # and inserted to a cracked holder of a trimmed "Authentic" 56 Mantle slab. Mile High might not be the culprit but they should have cought it.
Edit: If someone spent 13k on a $200 trimmed 56 Mantle the auction house should be held accountable.
Thank you for the response, OckhamsRazor. Fortunately, I've never been on the losing end of a cert conflict. Knock on wood.
Is the consensus then that the Mile High card is a trimmed card inside a compromised holder? I have to say that, rightly or wrongly, I'm a lot more confident purchasing cards with newer PSA flips nowadays. Not only am I more comfortable with the current grading standards, it seems that the older flips are frequently involved in situations like this.
It sure would be nice if, after grading the card, PSA would put a scan of the card (at least high dollar ones like this) in the system that could be searched when you verify the cert number.

Would that prevent or just contribute more to the problem in the future? I get what you're saying, but unfortunately, the scams will continue to evolve in a manner more sophisticated than this example. It would just be a matter of time before the fakes caught up with the legitimate cards in the image system.
I applaud PSA for addressing this issue in part with the new holder. Although I was not at the luncheon and have no other information on the holder (outside of what was posted), I'm hoping the new holder is vastly superior to the old. It is way too easy to break a card out of the old holder. Since the old holders are prone to stress indications in the first place, "frost" and legitimate marks are sometimes hard to distinguish. It is at least comforting to know that the bar codes are not functional for some of the illegitimate items.
I just thought that if PSA scanned the card immeidately after grading it, each cert number would only have 1 image associated with it, so if you wanted to verify a card, you could see an image of how the card looked when it was graded. But yeah, the scammers would probably find a way around that too. It's just scary to pay $10,000+ for a bad card at an auction house (a place that you think would be safe).

It's frightening. I normally just browse through the posts, but I felt compelled to comment on this thread, given the auction history of this card and the quality of the fake. Maybe this fake is obvious to those who collect '56 Topps cards, but the card itself (in the Mile High auction) did not really throw up too many red flags for me, given the sales venue. Frankly, if I were looking to add to my '56 Topps set (of which I don't actively collect), I'd have likely been a bidder in the auction. The "frost" that is apparent from the ebay auction could have easily been overlooked in the heat of a Mile High auction battle.
Should this card stay on ebay? It has now been proven to be a altered version of the original goodwin and co auction. Is it ok that is stays up for sale at this point?
<< <i>Maurice do the auction houses not inspect the items they are selling before listing them and do they stand behind the item if it is indeed either fake or tampered with? >>
Dpeck, this is the first tampered holder I recall seeing offered at a major auction house. I don't understand how it slipped through.
As for standing behind it, the auction house should be held accountable but the buyer may not even know there's a problem.

How funny is this? I put the card in my watch list and received the ebay reminder today... "Don't forget you're watching the Blazing 1956 Topps PSA 9 Mickey Mantle. Check it out now - plus more like it"
Looks like the card was sold and positive feedback was left to someone from alabama. Seems a little off as the sale on mile high was for 13,000.00 and this seller took the first offer of 12,000.00 without even counter offering. This doesnt even include the PSA fees. Not to mention the card has been shown to have conflict with being switched from the gooodwin auction cert. Not sure what is going on with this card as I have no clue. But Im wondering if this card got returned 2x to Mile high and after that they just returned it to the consignor? Then the consignor puts it on ebay and uses the past sales credit of Mile High auctions as credit for his card. Then takes the first offer and runs? Not sure what to think of this
Did you message the buyer through EBAY and point him to this thread? He has time to file a claim and get his money, hate to see someone get taken like that.
<< <i>Has anyone informed this guy that he just threw $12,000 into a sinkhole buying a worthless fake? >>
If people are dumb enough to buy/bid without doing a minute bit of research on a card that will cost that much, then they are getting what they deserve in my opinion. There are some dumb sellers out there, equally as dumb buyers.
I sent the guy a link to this thread, he can make his own decision as what to do from there. I would hope that if the shoe were on the other foot, someone would do the same for me.
<< <i>I sent the guy a link to this thread, he can make his own decision as what to do from there. I would hope that if the show were on the other foot, someone would do the same for me. >>
I am 100% with you Matt....I would look out for you, as I would hope you would look out for me. Most bidders hate to believe that they got ripped off. It's the same with people who fall for Nigerian scams. Noone wants to believe that they are gullible enough to fall for such things, so when they do, they are embarassed.
Got this from the buyer of the card on EBAY, he asked me to share as you can see.
"Already working on it. It was pretty obvious that the card had some issues as soon as it came out of the box that it was shipped in. I'm not going to say 100% whether it's fake or not b/c the seller has been VERY honest, open and straight forward about this situation (even though he only has 9 feedbacks.....as some people liked to mention in that forum that this purchase was discussed in).....and is offering a full refund. We are working together with PSA to verify its authenticity and we both have Mile HIgh involved.......and Brian Dent with Mile High (who sold it to my seller) is already offering to stand behind his sell 100%. This is a very unfortunate incident.....very unfortunate for the hobby...but everybody involved is working together to get it resolved.
This is why buying and selling on Ebay is so great. Everything is transparent and100% guaranteed.
Thank you for your concern, and please tell everyone on that PSA chat forum (........even the ones that bad mouthed me) that I appreciate everyone that made a comment pertaining to the sincerity of how they hoped it was resolved honestly. These things are terrible for the hobby, but is something WE ARE ALL susceptible to......and something that WE ALL will at some point be subject to. For me, this is my second high end fake in several years.....but both have been resolved quickly and honestly. "

I smell a rat with this story. Why buy the card for $12,649 from Mile High and turn right around and sell $12,000 on eBay? And if everyone is so honest how did a $2 card wind up in a 12K holder?

So it was sold by goodwin in 2008 and this year for 10000.00 by Mile high and then again in june for about 13000.00 by mile high.
And is now on ebay.
Even though his feedback is only 9, let's no overlook the fact that the seller did sell a shirt in May
let's assume for a moment that the Goodwin card was removed from its original holder and reholdered with a newer, cleaner looking appearance.
HTF did the old holder with flip escape from PSA so that another Mantle could be placed inside giving it the appearance of a 9?
there can't be TWO!? can there be TWO?
why would Mile High sell a card like that which clearly looks like it was tampered with?
or are we just posting in a parallel evil collector's universe?
Tampered holder, wrong spacing on the flip (the flip itself appears real but erased with new text added).

I printed both images and scanned the bar code using a hand held scanner.
The Goodwin card bar code read immediately and matched the cert number.
The Mile High card bar code was more difficult for the scanner to read, and it came back with cert number 07089901.
Not sure if it helps or confuses the issue more, but here is what that cert number is -
