Big time over reaction by the Umpire. The Ump should be suspended.

But it kind of neat seeing something rarely ever seen on the baseball field.

One of my biggest complaints about baseball is all the time wasted when players don't like a call. The batter here should have realized what was going on on strike two.

I am 100% behind the umpire here. Let's keep the game moving. This goes for pitchers as well, throw the ball or get a "ball" called.

  • Baseball has to be the only sport where this stuff happens. In basketball, the coach gets a Technical and that (normally) shuts him up, soccer the player will get a yellow card for dissent, football the player or coach would get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Baseball umpires act as if they relish in this sort of verbal "taunting". I went to the Tigers/Phillies game last Sunday and Miggy got tossed for saying "That's horrible" after a strike call. Ridiculous.

I agree 100%. Called strike should be called more often with the betters take too long between pitches. Same goes for the pitcher.
  • The rules are in place to get the game going at a good pace, but very few umpires actually enforce them.
  • My issue with the "The ump was just enforcing the rules" aspect is: Do you really think he calls this consistently? Or, did he just make this call, because he was bummed by what the batter said to him? I don't have a problem with him using this rule, as long as he does with every batter.
  • I played college ball. The ump definitely overreacted. He was well within his rights to enforce the rules. But he didn't give enough time for the batter to step in; and you could clearly see the batter didn't acknowledge him when the umpire was talking to him. I wonder if there was a language barrier. Because the batter only seemed to understand after he was out.
