My National pick-ups (scans included!)

I'd just like to start off by saying it was great to meet some of you guys this year and put some faces to the names I see here in the forums. The daily gathering a BBCE was a great idea and loved every minute it. Hope to do it again in Cleveland next year.

One of my main goals this year was to get to BBCE's booth ASAP on Wednesday afternoon and not for any unopened product! Ever since it was mentioned they were going to have a complete graded run of Kahn's Wiener cards I had to see if I could get my hands of a few Jimmys that I needed! I got there within 10 minutes after 4:00 and saw all 6 Jimmys on the top shelf. I asked Reed to see the 3 I needed, a '59, a '60 and a '61. The '61 was a PSA 8 and priced out of my range but the other two, a 5.5 and a 1.5 were destined to be mine! I also picked up 2 '61 Fleer wax packs at the same time. I had been eying them for months up on BBCE's website and told myself I would bust at least one at the National if they were there. More on those later...

Here are the two new Jimmy additions to be collection. BTW, this are the only 2 graded cards I've EVER bought at a show!

My other focuses this year were going to be on my '53, '58, '59, '68 raw sets and my '72 graded set.

I'd like to give thanks to mojorob and his great thread for the inspiration to break out the camera instead of scanning everything.

First are the '53s, I love this set and decided last year to finally start a Bowman set and '53 was it!
image

I've had a full '58 set for a couple years now but a large part of them came from a partial set I bought and it had many creased and some badly off centered card so I'm slowly upgraded it.
image

'59 Topps is another fairly recent addition that was sparked by obtaining a very nice partial set off eBay. These mostly filled holes but a few are upgraded as well.
image

The last of the raw set pickups are the '68 Topps. This was yet another recent set I obtained an almost complete set of (minus most of the stars) that was in pretty good shape. You may notice an example of what happens when you don't correctly mark things off your list when you find them image

Next up are some pickups I will be getting graded to add to my only yearly set that I will probably ever work on!

I'm not sure way I bought these...

And lastly comes the pack rips!!!!!

As mentioned earlier, I did bust 2 - '61 Fleer packs (one each day) that yielded the following cards. There were no major hits but man these cards were nice! 8 of the 10 cards are near perfect with the other two having corner issues. They're all going to PSA at some point.

Here are the good results from a 2 - '78 wax, 2 - '81 wax and a '72 2nd series wax pack.

Here are the "good" results from 2 - '86 was and 1 - '86 rack pack

I also busted a '72 1st series wax pack (non-BBCE) with no showable results image

Overall, it was a great National for me.

Scott

Scott, it was really great to finally meet you. I wish I had known you picked up those Brown Kahn's cards. Those are really tough, and would really have liked to have seen them. I know I will see you in Cleveland, maybe you can bring them with you to that show (hint hint). image

    Congratulations!

Scott ... thanks for sharing. Looks like you picked up some nice cards ... and that '61 RIP looks GREAT! Those 2 Browns are real nice ... can't find a better looking card sitting in a 1.5 slab ... I assume there is a decent amount of paper missing on the reverse?
    STAY HEALTHY!

Hey Scott, it was awesome to finally meet you this weekend. Dude you have balls for busting the 61 Fleer wax. I couldn't have done it but it looks like you did very well. Great job on the Jimmy Browns. I know you had to be stoked to get them.

The '60 Jimmy has some minor creasing and quite a few surface wrinkles on the upper right. The back is almost perfect however except for the creasing being slightly visible.

Steve mentioned to me Thursday about a guy that had been looking for a '60 for a long long time and was bummed that he missed it, was that you? Sorry if it was image

    Scott,

    Your National pick-ups ROCK!!!

Lots of really nice examples .... all over the place.
Any Kahn's Jimmy Brown is a most beautiful thing!
    Those are Super Looking Examples.

Those 61 Fleer football Rips must have been a Great Little Buzzz for ya.
I see some strong PSA 9's in your immeadiate future, maybe even better.
    I'll be rooting for ya.

Are you a Browns fan by the way?
I'm a long suffering one myself.

Here's a quick pic, you might appreciate it.
It's a first generation 8"x10" with the original photograph's stamp on the back.
A pretty decent "colorized" Rookie Card was made off of this one.

Again, Great post & Haul you made there.

Thanks for that pic, I've been looking for a nice scan of it. I have a scan of the cover of the SMR a few years ago, but not one without the extra graphics. I too made a new and improved rookie card with that scan! I'll have to see if I can find it...

Great cards Scott! The 1953 Bowman Football set has always been a favorite of mine and those look really nice!

Scott, it was great meeting you at the National this year. I really enjoyed watching your 1961 Fleer Football rip live and those cards really do look awesome in person as well. Some gem mint potential there.

I will not comment on your balls, however. image
