That coin's beautiful and, while I can see The Prince of Denmark (Shakespeare reference) grading it 58 because of the knee, looks 63+ to me.
Gold bean as a 58. Betcha it would bring $750-$1,000 in an auction as a 50
Maybe they would have liked it more if they thought the toning was original. >>
Thanks Colonel. A lot of us thought we were losing it.
As I said earlier, I've seen much worse knee/leg rubs on a few other MS64 NM seated halves - Eliasberg 1861-s is the most easily remembered. And even the Norweb 1855-s in MS61 has a massive leg rub that you could land a 747 on.
If this coin is MS it is grade inflation and market grading. Yes I could still change my opinion if I see it hand but if I saw the pictures presented in an auction from the opinions here I obviously wouldn't win it!
I'm confused about the confusion about any possibility of proof manufacture. Check out the Pittman 1849 50c PF66 (I grade it 4+) Heritage 1/13 lot 5664
After I learn to cut and paste I'm going to learn how to linkify.

The Pittman PR-66: I don't recall what this brought at Akers' sale raw, but it sure has hit the skids the last two (three maybe?) times across the block...IOW, it has been an albatross for the two or three owners previous to the 1/13 sale.

Considering that CJ graded it 64+.....that's probably a lot of the reason the coin has not performed well. I'm familar with a couple of other rarer seated coins from the Pittman sale that haven't done so well (ie overgraded by approx 2 pts). For whatever reasons, a number of Pittman and Eliasberg coins were given very optimistic grades for that period. That really triggered the boom to start getting your coins regraded. Any coins where the quality is considerably below the slab grade have been problematic the past couple of years.
I would have bought the Pittman coin at FUN for more than the buyer paid if I graded it lock 65. Very rare coin, wonderful hard mirrors, gorgeous, but with scuffs in the right obverse field.

<< <i>The coin is PL but I am pretty confident it is not a proof. >>
Edit to explain, I believe there are die cracks near DOL. on the reverse.
This certainly seems to be an example of that, anyway.
I knew it would happen.

<< <i>Wow! An upgrade from 50 to 64 would be a record breaker!
No it wouldn't.

That was my first thought looking at this thread and might be the reason no one has ever resubmitted for an upgrade
