My search for the elusive MS67 IKE, have I found it? Your opinions.

Well these scans are at 600dpi. On the obv. there is a light mark in the field about 2:00 o'clock that doesn't even show on the scan. On the rev. a few minor marks in the fields. This is the best Ike I have found. I was on the way home from a little overtime yesterday and I felt this over whelming desire to pull into this one new shop, although I did not have time...I did. I looked at (2) MS67 Ikes in the archives, sold at Heritage 04/05/01 and beleive this one to be as nice. image The pictures are are over 1 mb each, but I wanted you to get a good look to give me your best opinions. Thanks for looking.

It looks nice. If you really want a MS67 Ike, I have one if you want to buy it.image

May be AGC MS68. I don't believe this coin has any shot to PCGS MS67. I even seriously doubt that this could make PCGS MS66 based on the photo image

I would have to agree with jcping.

Remember that at that grade level it is not all just about marks. A MS67 should have quite a strong luster to it as well. From the PCGS Grading book for MS67 "The Luster will be outstanding". "the eye appeal will be superb"

It is always very hard to grade an Ike from a scan, but I really doubt it would get all that close to MS67 from PCGS. Just my opinion however.

Really can't grade MS67 IKEs from a scan. But from the scan, I would say the luster is too subdued. Also, a 72D in 67 would be at least a $5,000 coin. PCGS will not make a coin of that value unless it really dserves it.

Whoa! Can you edit your post to just put a link to the photos rather than embedding them, that way people don't get hit with them if they don't want to.

In addition to what's been said, it almost looks like it could be lightly circulated.

Another thing you'll need for a high grade (and strictly speaking, even for an MS65 grade) is a strong strike.

The 72-D can often be found very free of marks for some reason. In fact I've handled several 1972-D that were easily clean enough for MS67, but a weak strike kept them in MS64. That's not always consistently applied, though, as I've seen others in MS65 holders with less than full strikes.

Keep in mind the 72-D is low-relief so you can't compare it to later dates, but even still this one is not fully struck. For example, IN GOD WE TRUST on the obverse shows indistinct edges around the letters. The reverse looks better struck than usual for the date but you can still see some softness noted in the eagle talons.

There also appears to be some light scraping on the high points, but that may just be breaks in the luster (or grime).

Anyway... if the luster is decent in real life I'd say MS65 -- still not a bad buy for $5. image If you know what you're doing you might try cleaning it up to see what's under that drabness.

I agree with Tad! When I first looked at the coin, I said to myself "is it new?" No one commented on that except Tad. Either the coin is a super AU 59.9 or it has some sort of haze to it, or both. This is subduing the luster.

For a 67, blazing luster is a must, along with strike, which looks slightly weak for this coin (knowing the date is weakly struck)

I would somehow try to get the haze off the coin, then try to submit it. Let us know what it grades, or better yet, send it as is and let us know.

I should have said my scanner did not really pick up the really nice original mint luster. In fact it is truly unc. and nice eye appeal. I thought we would have some fun with this, but I have to say the ACG joke was a little much. IMHO I feel with the minor marks scattered on the reverse it will only go MS66. I will not dip it cause I think it will get its best grade as is. I will take segoja's suggestion and send it as is. Like Greg said it is hard to tell by just a scan. I already have a couple other invoices at PCGS, but thought this would be interesting to play with. Now if this comes back anything else that a MS66, I will open the flood gates for your "I told you so comments". I on the other hand I will be happy to have this coin to upgrade my set and enjoyed the fun in this thread.

So here is the invoice# 003326 (last time PCGS left off the 1st zero). Get ready and think up your best, and lets have fun with it. Have a great weekend all.

It's a very pretty coin which I'd be proud to own regardless. But if the new scan
does it justice, then I'll need an I told you so also.
