1984 Fleer Update Thread

I guess there is not an official thread for this set and I was wondering if anyone else is collecting it. Please ignore my post if you don't care about this set!

Completing this set in PSA 10 is one of my main collecting goals. When I was in the prime of my collecting years, this was one of those unobtainable sets for me. Of course, at the time, the big 3 cards were incredibly expensive and highly sought after. I never owned any of them as a kid. I'm also partial to this set because it contains the clear #1 Puckett rookie and that's my main player. The set also has some good HOF/star power and is small enough that it seems obtainable to me (132 cards). I understand that this set is not "rare", but it is scarce relative to its contemporaries and does have some condition issues that make a few of the cards really difficult in gem mint. Anyone who collected in the 80's must have a special place for this set in my opinion.

Any other '84 Fleer Update collectors out there?

I just got back a bunch from a lg sub, and although there are some solid 10's, there may be need for a few crack outs..............

Nice hits on the big three!! That Bochte is pretty tough too but a few have popped recently. The toughest seems to be the dang Carmelo Martinez!

God, what an amazing set that was. Any player who would have a breakout year and who also had a card in this set became a hot commodity. Aside from the big three, there were many cards that helped this become a near $1000 set: Mark Langston, Jose Rijo, Alvin Davis, and of course Bret Saberhagan. Heck, even the veterans such as Pete Rose, Tom Seaver, Joe Morgan and Dennis Eckersley were $15-$20 apiece. Jimmy Key was a hot card. It just went on and on.

I was a Pete Rose guy as a young collector circa 1988 and I had never even seen his '84 Fleer Update card until I spied it first thing at a show one day. I told my old man it would not last long. $15 later I owned it.

Agreed! The set is really deep in 80's card history. Steroids, cocaine, fading stars, HOF with early death, gambling, and more. I enjoy cards like Saberhagen and Langston that seemed for a moment they could become iconic, but never did. I think my big draw to this set is just how unobtainable it was to me as a kid. I rarely saw cards from this set at shows, and when I did they may as well have been priced at $1M because I couldn't afford it. It was sort of like the 80's Star basketball cards to me. I saw them in the price guide, but knew I could never own any of them. Now I collect both. Admittedly, I still collect the steroid era guys. It's my guilty pleasure. These were the cards I enjoyed as a kid. While I certainly have lost some respect for these guys I still think they have a big part in baseball history and in my own experience. I'm not sure how these cards will be treated 20-30 years from now, we will see. I still love the 1984 Fleer Update Clemens in PSA 10! I am a little ashamed to admit that pick up high grade Bonds cards too! Don't judge me!!

Wow - what a submission! Where did you get the cards you subbed?
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

I remember this set being untouchable for me price-wise when I was younger. It's a nice feeling to be able to acquire cards later in life that weren't in your budget as a kid. Another nice thing about this set is that it seems to be fairly easy to get 10's given the sturdy card stock.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

The Clemens and Puckett 10's came from a set off ebay. I subbed three different Gooden's and I'm not sure which of the three was from this set.

The centering can be tough and there are several cards in the set that are extremely difficult for various reasons (centering, print defects, etc.). I'd say the Carmelo Martinez is the most notorious and is a POP 1 in PSA 10. The fact that these sets were not sealed makes it a crap shoot when buying.

I never owned the set or was into the cards as a kid. Way too expensive.

-Before the insert craze of the early 90's, this really was one of those rare sets. I think the rumor was, 45,000 sets made or something. Versus the million or so 87 topps cards. For some reason, I never saw many 84 fleer update cards in california. I don't remember them very much in the late 80's, early 90's. Maybe it was because none of the star players were playing on the west coast. Like how the 84 donruss mattingly was popular in new york. Some of these cards were probably more popular regionally.

I remember when the clemens and puckett were some of the hottest cards in the hobby. This was when rookies were exploding, and the nolan ryan rookie was $1,000.

Remember when beckett use to list each individual card from sets in the 80's? One set would take up half a page. Alot of up arrows on 84 fleer update. Weren't the commons $3 or $5 a piece or something?

Looking back at the set, too many pitchers in it. Too easy for one of them to get injured or flame out.
