1983 Canadian National Juniors Mario Lemieux PSA 10 1/1

30 years of waiting and one finally popped. I always thought this set was way undervalued. I'm thinking this Lemiuex may go in the $1500+ range as I still think one or 2 more will pop in the next decade or 2. Still no PSA 10 yet for the Yzerman in this set. I love the set becasue it has the first cards of Lemieux, Yzerman and Vernon. I've owned a few sets since the 80's. A big PSA pet peeve of mine with this issue is if you look at the bottom right corner of this card, looks like slight damage and I'd wager it was caused in the encapsulation process as other cards in this set I've self-submitted have slight corner damage from the encapsulation process due to the corners seem to get pinched by the "baggie" inside. Still an awesome card and will be taking a swinging snipe at it. 1983 Mario Lemieux PSA 10 1/1

Cool card. It sure would be nice if they added a scan of the reverse, for a card that will probably fetch over a grand. Good luck with your snipe.

The reverse is blank, but I see your point - on a 4-fig card, take the 10 seconds to make and post a scan of the back.

I was wondering if that was the case. But it'd be nice if they noted that in the description. I should say, I love collecting random ad backs, so I'm probably a little more interested in the art work on the reverse that your average collector. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Very cool card. Has Lemieux star power faded some or is that just a non hockey guy like myselfs impression?

I would say with regards to hockey fans, no way. But the NHL itself has lost some popularity as the NHL has shot itself in the foot numerous times over the last decade or so.
  • I'm not a big fan of that card. I prefer Mario on a card with a Penguins uniform.

I'm that way with Gretzky too. Rather see him in an Oilers uni (or Rangers where he finished).
Can't stand cards of Gretzky in LA or St. Louis.

    Just personal preference.

I would take the position that Le Magnifique has lost quite a bit of cache in the last few years. Was always a favorite of mine but as owner, his comments have irked some people. The card in question is quite nice and I was also wondering when we would see a PSA 10
  • I don't know why but in my opinion his cards are undervalued.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Wayne Gretzky is an idol of mine. Meeting him 2 years ago at a Spokane Indians baseball game was a thrill that lasted for a couple days, the photo of which sits behind me all day at work. Only Steve Yzerman would be a bigger thrill for me to meet from any sport.

But Mario was the better player.

Mario put up essentially identical per game numbers vs Wayne, yet did it in eras where it was tougher to score and with lesser teammates. Wayne's big advantage over Lemieux was his health - and that's totally fair. But when they were on the ice, Mario was better.

And that PSA 10 juniors card is spectacular.

You have to remember, Gretzky had the advantage of playing the bulk of his prime years alongside the greatest pure goal scorer hockey has ever seen... who Lemieux is second all-time to for shooting percentage of players with at least 3,000+ career shots. Gretzky is 3rd by the way.

I would take Bossy or Brett Hull over Kurri all day. Hull or Bossy would have 1000 goals each if they played
next to Gretzky for 12 years.

That wasn't meant to imply he's the best hockey player ever or anything. It's merely a fact that he scored more goals per-shot taken than any player in NHL history... within the narrative of longevity (at least 3,000+ career shots).

I completely agree. The only time Hull played with a guy who could pass as well as Gretzky were the three years he played with Oates in St. Louis. He put up 72, 86, & 70 goals - the three best years of his career. 12 years next to Gretzky, especially in the high-scoring 80s, and Hull is well over 900 goals in his career.
  • You really have to go back and watch tape of Jarri Kurri to laugh at him trying to stickhandle.
His stick was cut short, and he could barely skate and carry the puck. Reg Leach had this problem too.

5 Bobby Orr's beat 5 Mario's, or 5 Wayne's any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Yeah, and 6 Bob Proberts beats 6 Martin Brodeurs - does that mean Probert was a better player than Brodeur?
  • It's true. Jari Kurri a first ballot hall of famer could barely skate OR stickhandle.

Pointing out a statistical fact is the "worst post of all-time", huh. Got it. ; )
