Apparently Doug Harvey has a heart attack on the plane on his way to Cooperstown

I was in Cooperstown today talking to the owner of the store who is having signings by Staub, Reardon, Harvey and a 4th player who escapes my mind right now.

Anyway, while I was there he received a phone call that Harvey had a heart attack on the plane going into Albany, NY. I really hope this was misinformation and he did not have a heart attack.

Oh my god, I hope that is a hoax.

You would think it would be all over the news. Nothing on ESPN (TV), nothing on their website ... nothing on METS.Com ... nothing when you GOOGLE it ... HOPEFULLY just some misinformation.

I was looking online for information as well. It was just this afternoon while I was at the shop where he was to appear. The store owner was kind of freaking out.

I want to clarify that the store owner did not have information on his status. Having a heart attack doesnt mean he died...hopefully, if this is true, the plane landed and he was brought to the hospital for treatment and is ok.
  • I hope he is ok. I had a chance to meet him and get his auto in Cooperstown when he was inducted. At the time, he was in frail health and battling cancer but took the time to sign everyone's item. He even apologized to me for the long wait but it was worth it. Very nice man and I wish him well regardless

I'm thinking this news would have broken by now. I'm assuming it was a false report (hopefully).

Doug Harvey and Gary Darling taught me umpiring at the Golden State Umpire School in the early nineties. Doug was a very generous man with his time and knowledge. Gary Darling had the absolutely foulest mouth I have ever heard, even to this day.

Hopefully he is doing well if indeed he did have a heart attack.

PS. I have to admit that I did not read this correctly this afternoon ... I was thinking MATT HARVEY, thus the reference to METS.COM.

Geez, I was thinking the same thing! Not that it's any better, but I thought you meant Matt as well! Hoping Doug Harvey is fine, too.

I checked again this morning and no news reports yet. I hope it was misinformation. I'll be going back to Cooperstown this morning and hopefully find out more news.

And yes, Doug Harvey the HOF umpire....not Matt Harvey the NY Mets pitcher LOL

Not to be confused with the Doug Harvey, as in, right up there with Bobby Orr, Nick Lidstrom, and Eddie Shore. He died in 1989.
