Whaaat kinda crazy Mickey frickey is this?! UPDATE: 3 FAKES!

i bought this beauty on eBay last week, and even though i knew immediately that the card was a phony when i received it, the jury is still out on the seller while i await my refund & also having examined some of his past and current auctions, i have a feeling he was handed a bunch of stuff and didn't know what the Mantle really is.....but, i could be wrong, wouldn't be the first or last time i'm sure - anyways, examine the card if you please and notice specifically the white ripple marks down the mid-left on the card surface as well as a scratch on Mick's face.....ok, features which could seem pretty obvious, ESPECIALLY if you saw them appear on another '63 Topps Mantle! first link below is the one i bought.

FAKE '63 Topps Mantle, bought 7-19 & returned

now today i am looking over auctions & stumble across this: another seller is peddling high end raw cards including a '63 Topps Mick and if you examine the card closely enough, even though it's in a screwdown, you can see the same ripples and scratch on the card surface.....i've examined the seller's other auctions and of course i'm suspicious, because something just doesn't see right about the cards being auctioned - duh.

same card roughed up in a screwdown

anyways, take a look, judge for yourself, and beware if you were considering either seller.

    yup, it's an epidemic now
  • Curious to know what you do when you find these auctions, do you notify the seller? Do you contact eBay?

zurbs, regarding this particular situation, my added discoveries have only begun to take shape today, however, i've had eye on each of these sellers for awhile now.

here's my stance: first and foremost i want my refund....as i stated before, i'm still unsure about my seller in question, but were he to attempt to sell his '63 Mantle again, i might have a complaint.

i already suggested that when he receives the return, that the card be taken out of circulation. we'll see what his reputation means to him. he has sold other stuff and has some satisfied buyers, and i can't find any other cards of his that make me think twice.......yet.

as for the other two sellers, i can only offer my own suspicions, but i'm trying to help keep anyone here from getting shtooped if they were so inclined to go look at this stuff.

i "suspect" each of the other two is a candidate for a criminal complaint, but without actual proof of such, do you believe eBay would take a forceful position with them?

i think a buyer needs to expose them, or maybe it's going to happen soon anyways, as i assume other fakes have already been paid for and delivered.

more than anything, i just don't want anyone here to go through the same hassle.

All three of those 63 Mantles have the same two yellow print dots in the green above his name, as well as what looks like a crease/wrinkle on the left side of the card--a crease or wrinkle that probably isn't there, as the card is probably a copy of a card that actually has said crease/wrinkle.

So, if you see a very nice 63 Mantle with some yellow print dots and a phantom crease... stay away!

exactly. each also shows a scratch running down Mick's forehead.....the backs on my return and example #2 are both the same, however, example #3 has a different appearing back, but still looks pretty darn bad.

i'm not only looking at these examples either. it took a few days and much examination to realize seller #2 & #3 are peddling other phony stuff - again, that's my opinion.

i look at the past completed auctions on the guy i bought from and could kick myself for blowing off some of the other cards he sold.
