Huge sell price for 1990-D MS66 Kennedy

I almost feel guilty selling this coin for this much, but there was spirited bidding on it which means several people were willing to spend big money on this. The final price was $491.76. I wonder what a MS67 would bring. On top of that look at what the 1965 in MS66 is selling for with 3hrs left. $511.00!!! Hey Matt, looks like you got a bargain buying my other 1965 MS66. You might want to sell yours now. BOB

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE SALE!! Of course, no one could have expected those prices but that is the great thing about ebay and this hobby, etc. Looks like you also "got out of moderns alive" and likely made a couple dollars on your collection in the process image Some of the coins you mentioned, as well as others I have recently seen offered for sale RETAIL at around 20% of your price realized!! I will be pricing a collection next week and will expect to be offering some "great bargains" based upon these levels!! image Wondercoin

Crazy, whacky, stupid money! And, think of this... there was an underbuyer(s) who also wanted the coin at almost the closing cost. Shesh!

  • I have to admit this is crazy, its all the registrys fault and pop report. Not to long ago it was worth about 5.00 tops. I just sent a really nice MS 65 1965 to teletrade that should be a MS 66, it might even be these lower grades will start to climb.

Bob you dont have to feel guilty, but I bet top dollar that buyer soon has buyers remorse, when they realise they paid WAY to much for that coin...ITs only worth that much to those willing to pay the price.....

and IM not quite ready to sell the one I bought from you I haven`t even seen it yet....image

I don't quite understand one thing:

In my Pop Report (July 01), there were 75 90-D Kennedys submitted, and 40 MS66, and 7 MS67! That would hardly seem to make MS66 look all that tough! The 65 Kennedy doesn't seem real tough in 66 either. BTW, this would seem to make most FS Jeffersons an insane bargain!

Way to go with your auctions though, and hopefully the buyer will come throughimage

I was asking about $50.00 and that was with shipping. Go figure. The 1965 finally sold at $688. I guess I eat well tonight. BOB
  • I think you had great timing on on your auctions. Congratulations! image

Did anyone get any Kennedy bargins at the heritage bullet sale?

you couldn't get in at the end which probably cost Heritage and the cosigners some $$$.

I got outbid on 2 of the 67's I still need.

I did manage to get 2 ms66 Kennedys at rock bottom prices as compared to ebay.
they might be upgrades for my current 66s

    24.15 and 18.40 + shipping for for an 89p and 91p.
    2 91p have gone for $96 & $129
    1 89p went for $96

I also got a 1867s seat half au50 (original). I think I might use the 2 kennedy's 2 help finance my seated half.
The price for the 90-d did seem out of control.

Like I've stated before, insane prices by individuals who are just buying the holder. Last week I bought an extra 1965 buisness strike Kennedy in PCGS MS66 for $59 from a major dealer that was happy to get rid of the coin that was advertised in major publications and on the internet for some time. The coin is very close to a 67 and I may submit it on a hunch. I made the first one and paid my local dealer $1.35 for the coin about 8 months ago. I made a buisness strike MS 66 a966 from the same dealer but raw Kennedys are hard to come by around here due to lack of local interest. Some of the bidders for these high priced Kennedys recently already have the coins but I think they are either adding them as "spares" or investment potential. One of these days I'll upgrade my sets on the registry but right now I'm enjoying some of this madness.

I am at ~50% completion on my MS Kennedy set, and I am laying low, waiting for some of this insanity to blow over. I am glad you got such good bids.

I'm sending in some 1990-D Kennedies to be graded.image I think that both of them are solid MS66s, but one of them I think has a shot at MS67. Does anyone know what the MS67s sell for?

  • Darn, And I just wasted 600 bucks on a proof Seated Half and I could've had a real ""KENNEDY"" from 1990 in my collection!!!

No way, I would take that Seated Half anyday over that Kennedy.image

To think my 10 rolls of obw 1990-D and 10 rolls of obw 1991-D Kennedy halves are lurking and waiting for their day in the sun. These rediculous prices are only going to put some more upward pressure on the roll prices.

Nah.....I would rather keep everyone in suspense. Someone has to preserve the original rolls?

  • more over, what does a 1990 mint set sell for?? i mean if u have a mint set thats a VERY good shot at 65+ right..
  • I bought 10 mint sets off ebay around $8- $10 and picked the best 3 halves out of 20 to send in I got back 2 64s and 1 65.
I don't think the mint was giving much love to the Kennedy halves in 1990. That was a around a hundered dollar investment.
I think it was a good education. High quality Kennedys aren't common but aren't that rare. I think you can defend paying
    $50 for a 1990 in ms66 and maybe $100.

I think you have to be careful speculating on grades based on the population reports. x number sent in verse x number 66 &67. Most of the pros that send in the coins will only send in coins that have a great chance of making 66 and 67. The fact that
few 90s are sent in is a testiment to there poor quality.

From the coins I've gotten in rolls off ebay, I'd rather look at mint sets. The machines they use to roll them can leave lots of scrapes.

I also collect seated halves and am amazed at the prices you can get them at. you can get a 1873-s in xf45 for 600-700 dollars
but heritage has a 73-s in ms65 for 10s of thousands of dollars. It is amazing what people will pay for the best. I collect in xf45
Many of the san frans have mintages of 1 million or less. the pop reports from the big 3 show few being certified in any grade.
The price tag is around 150-200. Few people collect them but you know the pops won't climb much. Joe

I bought 60 1990 mint sets at $7 a piece. I only found those two that were worthy. One of the Kennedies looks like it would grade MS60.image

A good rule of thumb is that about 2% of mint set coins stand out as
high grade, and about 2 mint sets in 3 will have a least one gem.
