Real Wax Packs Are Back? With Pearl Jam Wax Pack

So my buddy came in to work today. He was in Chicago for the Pearl Jam Concert at Wrigley. He knows I collect cards and he hands me a pack of Pearl Jam cards. I think they were only available at the concert.
So he hands them to me and I notice they are wrapped tight and then it hits me. It's a real wax pack. I thought I read that all of the old wax pack machines broke and the card companies went to the new style packs.

Does anyone know who made the cards and who has the wax pack sealer machine?

    Thanks for posting!!!

I just snagged a pack from EBAY.

I never got to see them live. I had tickets in 1998 and didn't get to use them.

The cards look to be in the 1972 Topps baseball design, but with black borders. They look super cool.

Still have yet to see a back scan of any card.

The 71/72 motif is really sharp...that would make a terrific baseball card.

I tweeted Pearl Jam for you, let's see if they respond telling me who the manufacturer of the sets is. You can buy these for about $50.00 a pack on eBay right now (ouch!). Here is a photo of an open set from eBay in case you want to see the cards:

    Pearl Jam

It looks like a baseball theme due to the venue.

Here is a cool looking hat.

If memory serves, the band was originally called Mookie Blaylock. So someone at least likes sports.

excellent memory. in the early days they were also expert crowd surfers and encouraged their fans to toss high-top sneakers on the stage.

then, they would throw them back. one of those sneakers hit me in the head. ow. image

They must love baseball because they had Ernie Banks out on stage and I think they were singing a baseball song they wrote for Wrigley.

sportscardtheory - I saw on card back but they are puzzle pieces and I didn't see any manufacture info on it. I have a question it to the guy who has an empty box on eBay.

dytch2220 - Let me know if you hear anything back from the Tweet.

Thanks for the help guys and if I find out anything out I will let you know.

How the hell does that big round sticker fit into the smaller square pack???

    7 cards

I am guessing that one of the cards in this lot is actually a sticker. I have seen a few lots with 7 cards.

Doesn't this belong in the non-sports forum? Sorry, forum-nazi background.

    Cool cards and packs nonetheless.

I created the thread about the wax pack and the lack of real Sports Card Wax packs and not what were in the packs. If it needs to be moved, have it moved.

you're in the right place. this is a pretty cool thread, actually. let's keep it here and make good use of it.

Nascar see if you can find out how much a pack cost at the show.

A few of the listings indicated that there was a big storm and many got their cards wet. This could be a good thing from an investment standpoint.

I have purchased two packs so far at an average cost of $44. If they come down in price after this initial pop I will be buying more for sure. If not then at least I grabbed a few.

  • Dpeck, the packs were $5.

I saw them sometime in the mid-late 90s. Wasn't really a fan, but hey, they came to my small college town, so we went. Anyway, I remember noticing about 10-12 different basketball Starting Lineup figures affixed to the top of the bass player's amp. I thought that was pretty cool
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
I figured they were in that range.

    Thanks Maurice.

They were $5 at the show. The show did get held for 2 hours due to a thunder storm. I will ask him how much it rained.
  • There was also a limit of 2 packs per person and sold out quickly.

"When we were recording our first record, we had a per diem of about $10. So when we got lunch at the store across the street, we'd always buy a pack of basketball cards. When we turned in our tape, we didn't have a name for the band yet so we put a Mookie Blaylock card in the case. We were about to go on a tour and still didn't have a name and needed one quickly. We were told it didn't need to be the name that we were going to use forever, just something for the tour. Someone saw the Mookie Blaylock card and said, ‘How about Mookie Blaylock?' We decided to go with it and did a 10-show tour with Alice in Chains as Mookie Blaylock. Mookie was cool about it, too—he didn't sue us. I actually got to meet him later on and shoot around a little bit. We also made a Pearl Jam T-shirt with a picture of him on it. I guess we owe Mookie a lot."

I was told that the folks on the floor got moved inside before the rain started. I am not sure about the folks in the stands so the fact that some cards got messed up due to rain might be true.

There was a limit of 2 packs per person and my buddy said he did not see stacks of wax boxes.

Much like PJ20, fans traveled to Chicago from both near and far and were treated to a setlist that included gems like Mother Love Bone's "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns."

This is such an awesome song!

It says there was a crowd of over 40,000 in attendance.

    Box

This ended earlier tonight. This is the first image I have seen of what a complete box looked like. There was another listing a few days ago with what appeared to be a portion of the box but not a complete one.

    EBAY sales

These cards are on fire. There are recent sales of single packs in the high $60 range now.

  • Impressive! Talk about a steal for all those who purchased them at $5 a pop at the shows. I wonder if other bands will start doing this soon?
  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭

Will PSA grade these? Seems like an easy set to get approved. Wondering if anyone has tried and gotten rejected for any reason.

I tried a few years ago and they got rejected.

SGC and BGS grade them so perhaps PSA does now or will.

I have a nice little batch of blazers from the packs I bought and sold the rest.

Sealed packs are still very strong on eBay.

  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭

Seems strange that they wouldn’t grade them. It’s a pretty straight forward set with plenty of available information about them.. the packs would be cool slabbed

I see a bunch of Pearl Jam packs that are in the vain of 1990 Pro Set NBA on eBay. Kind of cool looking!!

  • StingrayStingray Posts: 8,843 ✭✭✭

And it appears they did some that resemble 1991 Topps!!
