How about the 1794 SP FH dollar (US)? I'm sure Andy knows too much about it that he doesn't need me to go round that stuff up for him.

This is official -modern- pre-euro Greek coinage after several centuries of no Greek currency at all.
1876 100 drs gold, mintage 72, survivors unknown.
Very few unrecorded proofs seem to exist, no more than 3-5, one of which realized ~$200K hammer at the Millenia sale, an NGC PR64 CAM
(previously sold by Kuenker at 90000 euros hammer, raw)

Why is that, BTW? Perhaps a brief history lesson?
This is like my most-favorite thread ever!

Palestine (Mandate) 1927-1947
The key is the 1931 100 MIL which is the crown of the series. Valued presently at 15-20K in MS! (MS62)
The Kagan-Maremba Museum coll. (59 pc set plus 4 dupes= 62pcs) sold privately to a Middle Eastern (not Israel) collector in late April 2013 for $40,000. All dates were represented but the grades only ranged from AU55 to MS62. All were graded by PCGS. There were no high grade key dates in this set! The 1931 100 Mil was the highlight of this offering hence it seems the averaged out price of this piece alone is about $25,000 which is by far the highest price paid for a regular Mandate series coin to date.
This example below is in PCGS AU58 holder (looks identical to the below graded Kagan MS62 example), and resides in the Mandate Mints PCGS Registry.

The Waitangi crown came to my mind, too, as did the 1943 Irish florin. I once collected the entire Irish predecimal series from 1928 up, in the three Danscos, and that was the only one I lacked. I had the '43 halfcrown, which is also pretty rare. MrEureka might remember that set, as I sold it to him, several years ago. It was fun.

Boy, I`ll bet there are hundreds if not thousands of "Fake Dots" out there masquerading, eh? Seems that would be child`s play for those so nefariously inclined.

Most expensive coin sold so far at auction:
Sold for EUR 76,000, approximately $100,000.
Would probably easily be surpassed by a 25 cents with young Wilhelmina 1891, which sold for EUR 43,000 in 2001. Two struck, one in national museum in the Netherlands, the other in private hands (couldn't find an image).

Rec71, if we are going down that path, than Perth Mint struck a mammoth Koala(?) coin recently (2012, I think) making that Australia's biggest coin. But I don't think they marketed it that way. I believe it was considered bullion. I posted it on the PM board, so it's searchable.
