1990 Score Baseball Promos

Does anyone have any of these or know where to find some of them? How were they distributed? I have read that the 1989 stat line will be blank.

Here's what the Nolan Ryan 1990 Score Promo looks like. Missing the '89 Stats...

Here you go, from the 2011 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards:

"To preview its 1990 baseball cards, Score pre-released the first 110 cards (#221-330) from its red-bordered series as samples. Subtle differences exist on most cards between the samples and the issued version; most easily spotted is that the samples have no statistics on the 1989 season or career lines. Many cards have different versions of the career highlight write-ups on the back, as well. A handful of the sample cards were widely distributed to dealers and the hobby press, while others from the sheet were released more sparingly, creating inequities in the number of each card available. As few as two examples are know of some of the superstar cards, making them extremely expensive among the single-player specialists."

    280 Bo Jackson $12.50.
    250 Nolan Ryan $150.00.

I've never seen a Butler. It's supposedly out there somewhere (#236).

The score promos through 1993 were all tough because they're unmarked. At least the earliest have the missing stat line, 1993 doesn't.

Here is what Beckett's site says about the promos:

"These 110 different cards were randomly sent to dealers to promote the 1990 Score issue. The cards may be distinguished from their regular issue counterparts by the absence of the previous season's statistics and the fact that the career stats are not updated."

So how does one tell if a 1993 card is promo or not...?
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Here is what the standard book says about 1993 score promos:

"Only close comparison with regularly issued versions can detect these unmarked promos. The promos feature slightly different croppings of the pictures, situated higher than the normal version."

    Player List:
    1) Ken Griffey Jr.
    3) Frank Thomas
    4) Ryne Sandberg
    6) Cal Ripken Jr.
    7) Roger Clemens
    8) Bobby Bonilla
    10) Darren Daulton
    11) Travis Fryman

Yes, I have the Griffey, Ripken, Sandberg, Thomas, Bonilla, and Daulton...all have very minor cropping differences on the front.

1993 Pinnacle is tough too...the only real difference is the size of the trademark symbol "TM" at the top.

Got the reply from that guy on another forum:

"They are fairly hard to distinguish from the regular base cards if you aren't paying attention. For one, only the red subset within the set has promos, none of the other colors have promos. I think the red has 110 cards total. Other big names within Red are Bo Jackson, Nolan Ryan, Kirby Puckett. They are not marked as a promo or sample in any way. You are correct though. The stat line for 1989 is completely blank and so is the Major League Totals line below it. Some early Score promos (1988) have .000 as stats on the previous year, but in the 1990 case, it's just blank. Other than the blank area in 1989 and ML Totals, there is nothing different with the cards. They are very rare though. I've only seen a few players and I've searched for them regularly. Currently, I only have the Will Clark and a Mickey Tettelton from 1990. Distribution, as far as I know, were 1 to 2 cards per dealer, send through direct mail. I've got an original mailing envelope with literature/sales sheet that my Will Clark came in, so they were distributed as normal promos were back then. Good luck on your quest finding them. I'd be an interested buyer if you do."

As far as I know, this is the run-down of Score promos, please add any info you have, I'm sure this isn't complete:

    1988-1993 Score Promos

1988 Score Prototypes - missing names, pictures, text and other design bits, McGwire, Dawson, Mattingly among subjects.
1988 Score Promos - Denny Walling, Barry Larkin, etc - listed in big books.
1989 Score Prototypes - minor design changes, copyright in text box, Jose Canseco #1 is the only confirmed subject so far.
    1989 Score Promos - *
1990 Score Promos - missing 1989 and career stats, affects "red series" cards 221-330, Ryan, W Clark, Gwynn, Ozzie, Bo among subjects.
1991 Score Promos - missing 1990 and career stats, affects "teal series 1" cards 101-200, Brett, Puckett, Gwynn among subjects.
1992 Score Promos - missing 1991 and career stats, skip-numbered set featuring 9 or 10 players including Griffey.
1993 Score Promos - all stats present, minor photo cropping differences from base issue, players include Thomas, Griffey, Sandberg among subjects.

*1989 promos, from what I understand affect the "purple series" cards #221-330, are missing their copyright line on back and include 1988 stats, Ryan, Biggio, Bo among subjects. Need more info on these.

These are not 1990 Score Promos. There is a green card in your pack(s) and only red cards 221-330 were made into promos. I would be very surprised if that Nolan Ryan was missing it's stats on back. This looks like some other type of special issue, promotional (food, stadium, etc) item where they repack base cards. Pro Set did this kind of thing frequently around this time.

This is not how the 1990 promos were distributed. They were inserted, loose, in a large envelope with order form and product info.

  • I'm looking for the Jesse Barfield 1990 promo card. Also the 1991 Barfield promo, if anyone has a lead on one. Thanks for the help...
