please refresh my memory....

how many grades lower will an OC card grade if the card was graded without qualifiers ie what would an 8OC grade without qualifiers; a 6 or a 5 or does it depend on the card and is every situation different? thanks in advance!

Typical rule of thumb is two full grades, but that is always subject to the severity of the centering. I've seen PSA 9 OC cards that would be hard pressed to get an unqualified PSA 6. but most would make it into a PSA 7.

As an example, this card would not make it into a PSA 7...

While this card might actually pull a PSA 8 if resubbed...

  • It depends how OC the card is. The two grade deduction that others have mentioned is only for the Registry.

The non-qualified grade, under the current system, will typically be a minimum of a 3 grade deduction when requesting no qualifiers. For example, a PSA 9 (OC) should be no higher than a non-qualified PSA 6. The actual grade assigned will be the highest grade that the centering falls within the acceptable standards.

The OC qualifier was applied differently with the very early PSA graded cards (typewriter font). A "typewriter font" PSA 9 (OC) could be a non-qualified PSA 8.

As for value, collectors often value cards with OC qualifiers as if there was a two grade deduction.

The grade assigned to the Dean Talafous card that is posted above is not the norm under the current system but would have been the norm back in the "typewriter font" era.

Thanks for the informative reply maurice!

Scott, maurice et al: please take a look at ebay item # 400526335485 and tell me what grade you think this card would get sans qualifiers (sorry, wouldve posted a link to the listing if I was link-posting savvy!!)

It appears to be 76/24 centering which just misses for a PSA 7 but is fine for a PSA 6.

Thanks boys--yup, thats what I figured when I bought it; I NEVER buy OC cards (except for tonight!) and am collecting this set in psa 6 (and 7 when I can steal em cheap!) and when I saw this one I figured it should 6 since I've got other 6's (and a couple 7's too) with worse centering. Appreciate the help and feedback!!

My quick'n'dirty rule of thumb for this has been if the card w/ the OC qualifier is visually, notably OC in 2 directions on front to the point it becomes a distraction then it gets a 2-grade deduction for NQ, and if only noticeably OC in one direction then it would more likely get a 1-graded deduction for NQ. Not always perfect since it doesn't take into account more specific actual measurements, but for a rough estimate that has been fairly accurate to my experience, it seems to work out. This is pretty much in line with the 2 cards otwcards used in his example on this thread.
