A Weekend Game - Pick 20 Coins - WE HAVE A WINNER

After reading Lord Marcovan's post (sorry to see you go Lord), I thought of a game. Suppose your collection could be composed of just 20 PCGS graded coins (yes, enough to fill one and only one PCGS blue box). What 20 would you take. Each coin selected has to be realistically purchaseable for $5,000 or less.
If Mitch and Dbldie would agree to be the judges, I will give a small prize to the best hypothetical set assembled. If they can't agree, I'll pick the winner between the two they select. Let's keep it open for submissions until 6:00 pm tomorrow, California time. I'll list my own set later, but of course will not be eligible for the prize.
How about it Mitch and Dbldie? Will you guys be the judges? If so, put up a post on this thread. Looking forward to seeing the sets.

Ok, here's my box:
1. Bust dollar (best eye appeal for $5K)
2. Seated dollar (best eye appeal for $5K)
3. Morgan dollar (MS68 common date)
4. 1921 High Relief Peace dollar (MS65 with a full strike, no spots or streaks, can afford to be choosy at this grade level)
5-20. 1971-1978 P&D Ikes (MS66-67 as dictated by date and $5K limit)
This gives me a nice heavy box full of big dollar coins, the joys of type collecting (5 different types), plus the joys of set collecting (full set of date/mintmark clad Ikes).
Here's my set. Went for the most variety I could--minus gold. For example, all denominations covered, one each of coins minted in many denominations (barber, seated, draped bust, capped bust, flowing hair, etc.), most mints covered, and went for higher grades vs. scarcer coins most often.

I eliminated gold because of cost and a desire to have a representative of each denomination possible. I guessed at prices I might be able to find a coin for after a long time searching. After all 20 coins isn’t a large collection so I would spend more time searching for PQ coins at the best possible price.

I have one more choice. If I were given the $100 grand to do this with I’d leave the last choice for later. If SLQs or Peace dollars had proofs that would be my choice. Honestly I need to learn more. Are there any proof Large Cents? If one could be had for $5 grand I'd have to get one. To be fair I have to choose something so will go with:
Seated Liberty Dollar – PR 65 Cam
Thanks for asking. I enjoyed putting together this list
09/07/2006
1) F12 Problem Free (PQ Planchet) Chain Cent.
2) MS63RED 1909-S Indian Cent.
3) 1955/55 Lincoln in MS64RED.
4) MS64 1912-S Liberty Nickel.
5) 1942/41 MS63, bright Mercury dime.
6) 1957 MS68 Washington quarter (with light, pastel toning).
7) 1960 PR69DCAM Franklin (Black and white w/ NO specks!).
8) 1998- S SMS Kennedy in 70. (I know this is no where near $5,000- but I like the looks of it and it has a "$5,000" appeal to me).
9) AU50 1799 even gray tone Bust dollar.
10) a VG08 1794 dollar (with slight 'problems'. That's ok. It's Old, and it's Rare!).
11) 1884-CC wild rainbow toned Morgan in MS66. (I know I'm paying too much for the toning, but what the heck. It's a "CC" dollar, and I love the color!).
12) 1925-S Peace dollar- right on the edge of full GEM MS65 status. (Beautiful coin and a possible upgrade on another day).
13) 1971-D Ike in full MS67+ grade. These are pretty in Superb GEM!
14) 1796 Ten dollar Bust gold. I know it's been cleaned and slightly mishandled, but the history this coin holds and to think it missed the melting pot over in Europe when its melt price superceded its face value. It's a survivor. $5,000 would probably get me into a solid FN12.
15) Pine Tree shilling- Large Planchet. I love this design and would hope to shop around and find one that was decent (although, probably bent into a witches piece!) FN12.
16) 1920-S 10$ gold Indian. I think this is a sleeper date and I hardly ever see these offered for sale. I think I could sqeak into an MS60 for my price limitations.
17) Clark Bruber & Company Twenty $. Nice, circulated VF20 grade. The stories this coin could tell! Rare too.
18) 1849 Twenty $ Mormon Gold. It was this nation's first $20. gold coin and I know I couldn't afford the $10. piece. I love the way the coin translates to "pure" but yet the gold is about 90% pure!
19) And, my favorite two coins I wait until last: 19 would have to be an 1836 Gobrecht (the common, 1,000 mintage variety!) in PR06! Sure. Why not? I love idea of that coin being carried by someone who cherrished it.
20) My favorite coin of all: The 1792 Half Disme. I know mine would be somewhat 'spent' and probably repaired over its lifetime, but to simply hold one of these and to know it was our founding coin (not agreed to in all circles). That to me defines "Coin Collecting"- and this coin would be a daily reminder of why I love this hobby.

Unless a date is specified, any date/MM would be fine.
1. Braided Hair half cent - MS65RD (An unusual denomination that most non-collectors don't realize existed)
2. Braided Hair large cent - MS65RD (Yeah, "pennies" used to be THAT big)
3. Flying Eagle cent - MS65 (neat eagle)
4. 1871 Indian Head cent MS65RD ( or any other date from 1866-1873)
5. Two cent piece - PR66RD (another unusual denomination)
6. Three cent silver, Type 2 - MS66 (ditto)
7. 1921-D Mercury dime MS65FB (Can't get a nice MS 1916-D for $5,000)
8. Twenty cent piece - MS65 ("Too much like a quarter" A line heard again regarding the SBA and Sacagawea dollars)
9. 1924-S Standing Liberty quarter - MS65FH (Tougher date, great design)
10.1932-S Washington quarter - MS65 (Not at all impressive to a lay person, but probably a good investment coin)
11. Capped Bust half dollar - MS64 (Even though I think they're overpriced)
12. 1899-S Barber half - MS65 (the "S" mint halves from this era can have luster that's reminiscent of an 1881-S dollar)
13. 1916-S Walking Liberty half (First year of issue, a better date, and a MM on the obverse)
14. Bust dollar - AU (Not an easy coin to forget, once you've seen a nice one)
15. Seated dollar, either with or without motto - PR64 (preferably with at least SOME cameo effect)
16. Trade dollar - MS64 (Both MS65 and PR65 are over $5,000, but I'd rather have a MS coin with a couple of marks than a hairlined proof)
17. Liberty $2½ gold - MS67 (with creamy gold luster)
18. Indian Princess three dollar gold - MS64 (yet another strange denomination)
19. $5 Indian gold - MS64 (incuse design)
20. $10 Indian gold - MS65 ( after seeing a 65, it's hard to settle for anything less)

1. IKE 1974D MS67. Voted the King of IKEs, highest graded C/N, a magnificent peac*ock. Recently a serious IKE collector asked me to name a ridiculous price on it and he would buy it. Couldn't form any number to quote!
2. Proof Mercury 1942 PR68. Magnificent rim toned. Lusterous. No flaws, none.
3. Lib 5c 1886 MS65. Key date, gem, blazing white, undervalued series. What more can be said?
4. Lib 5c 1895 MS66. Highest graded pop 3. Blazing white. End of story.
5. 2c 1871 MS65 RD. Rare date, highest graded, burning red.

11. IKE 1973D MS67. Beautiful toning, smooth, highest graded.
12. Proof Franklin 1961 PR68DCAM. Not my most expensive, but certainly my most beautiful deep cameo Franklin. Highest graded.
13. Proof Walker 1938 PR67. Blazing white, fully struck, type piece.
14. Proof 3c Silver PR65. Glorious colored toning.
15. Buffalo 13D Type 1 MS66. Typical attractive gold Buffalo toning, wonderful design, better type date.
16. Walker 44D MS67. Has it all. Blast white, highest graded, fully struck.
17. Peace Dollar 1926 MS66. Wonderful pastel toning. Better date type.
18. IKE 1974S MS68. Highest in grade Peac*ock.
19. IKE 1977D MS66. Blazing Peac*ock. Should be and hopefully will one day reside in a 67 holder.
20. Franklin 1953 MS66. Beautiful multi-collor pastel toning. Coin is FBL, but I don't expect PCGS will admit it and make a $25,000 coin.
There it is.

First, let me mention how impressive everyones box of coins was!! I tried to judge all the entries with a total open mind and I quickly realized how drawn I was to variety in the box (I can easily see how the type sets are soaring in popularity these days). Hence, an entry such of Don's entire list of Commems (while definately containing coins I may have personally mentioned on my own list) didn't titilate me anywhere near the lists containing 15 or more different types of coins. And, of course, you would need to be a millionaire to own Typetone's box of 20!!!
There were definately 2 or 3 "boxes" that I had a great deal of difficulty chosing a winner from. But, my vote for the neatest box of 20 coins goes to ....................
Cocinut.
What a marvelous selection of coins (in fact his $10 Indian could even be an MS66). I could look at that box time and time again and never tire of it. While it was missing nickels and Morgans, as I looked at the coin it did include, I found myself agreeing with Cocinut that I really wouldn't want to get rid of any of those!
Congratulations Cocinut on a spectacular box of coins and thanks Greg for making me a judge as a really enjoyed carefully reviewing each an every box of coins in the contest

Cocinut. Send me a PM with your address and I will send your prize.
Mitch. Thank you for the great judging.
Thank you all for Playing
Greg S.
Thanks Greg!
I really enjoyed thinking up a list and then reading the other great lists. It is clear everyone needs more than one box
Jim
I salute the posters on the various boxes of 20.
