I remember the Rush crowd was the stoner crowd. More independent and isolated but definitely a stoner crowd. The Van Halen crowd was the party crowd. The jocks and hipsters. I remember it being very obvious. Its funny how the 2 bands have been linked together over the years, yet Alex Van Halen is married to Ray Daniel's (Rush manager) sister

The Rush/Van Halen rivalry was big at the time and earlier. I was a huge VH fan, not Rush and when Fair warning came out, I thought Unchained was the best song I ever heard. My best friend was a drummer and Rush fanatic and honestly I blew off Rush without ever listening to them, thought I thought 2112/Temples was pretty cool. My buddy bought me a ticket and made me go to see Rush and said he would shut up if I still thought Rush sucked. That was 1981 and I have never, ever looked back.
Did anyone in the NY area see any/all of the five Radio City shows in September 83? 9/18,19,21,22,23. Rush was the first rock band in eons to play there and it was electric. I went to all five shows and for the first four nights Marillion opened and was booed and met with chants of "we want Rush". On the fifth and last night when it started yet again, they stopped playing and snapped. "We have listened to your crap for 5 nights. We are here to play for you and whether we play or not, rush isn't coming out any sooner, blah blah blah" and they got an ovation. Cool stuff and fond memories.
VH was hip in the mid 70's, back in the days when you could still see them locally and look forward to getting close enough to the stage to be soaked in human sweat.
by '83 @ the US Festival, DLR sealed the deal by insulting The Clash and becoming pitifully drunk while carrying his JD bottle and forgetting the f'n words - he literally bellowed as much to over 100,000 adoring fans.
after that, the Hagar years were just muzak.
Rush, on the other hand, became a forever fascination after i attended Chicago Jam II in '79 when they co-headlined with Foghat. it still ranks as one of the best shows i ever attended. they played the entire Hemispheres record note-for-note, if i remember correctly.....but maybe not, i partied with some VERY cool people from the night before until they let us into the wreckage of Comiskey Park (Disco Demolition Night had recently set a new standard for recklessness).
i could never get my wife to attend a VH concert, but we've seen plenty of Rush shows together. cool chick, she is.

I had a bootleg vinyl concert from a Rush Chicago show back in the early 80's. I remember listening to Natural Science off that record and just saying wow.
Why is the Mathewson ball so rare ? Because he didn't sign a lot ?
Ooh, there's no bread, let 'em eat cake There's no end to what they'll take Flaunt the fruits of noble birth Wash the salt into the earth
But they're marching to Bastille Day. La guillotine will claim her bloody prize. Free the dungeons of the innocent The king will kneel And let his kingdom rise. Ooh, there's stained velvet, dirty lace, Naked fear on every face See them bow their heads to die As we would bow as they rode by And we're marching to Bastille Day La guillotine will claim her bloody prize Sing, oh choirs of cacophony The king has kneeled To let his kingdom rise.
Lessons taught but never learned All around us anger burns Guide the future by the past Long ago the mould was cast For they marched up to Bastille Day La guillotine claimed her bloody prize Hear the echoes of the centuries Power isn't all that money buys.

<< <i>That CY Young signed ball looks very white. How does that happen ? >>
He lived until 1955. The ball could be only 60 well-preserved years old.
A.H.: "Which ball would you like to purchase, Mr. Lee, the Mathewson or the Cy Young?"
Geddy: "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."

Just noticed that one is being offered up in the upcoming Heritage Platinum auction, so we might get some idea of a ballpark figure.
