Question about T206 Cobb Red Portrait.

As I'm sure all or most of us have seen, T206 comes along with the years 1909-1911.

I have a T206 Cobb Red Portrait.

Does anyone know how I can tell which year the card is from? either 1909, 1910 or 1911?

I've searched the net and can not find the answer.

I presume the factory # and the set amount will play a role in determining?

The back of mine is a Piedmont, "New Baseball Series 350-460 Subjects, Factory 25."

At the top, next to the words "New Baseball Series" it has that weird blue blobby shape thing, which I honestly can't tell if it's a finger pointing to the left or if it's a baby seal of some kind.

Anyway....can you help? Just looking for the specific year.

Thanks

There is a definate way to tell, but I have always been confused as to how. Because it says 350-460 subjects on it, you can rule out 1909, so most likely 1910 or 1911. I believe it is 1910 because some cards say 460 subjects, which would mean they knew they had over 360 printed. Sovereign and Piedmont were the first backs printed, which makes me believe yours is 1910.

This would be my best guess

You should probably post this question on the net54 forum. There are a billion (and counting) T206 experts there. image

The blob is a hand with pointed finger pointing at the word new. There was a very nice scrapbook/register found quite a few years ago that listed some of the dates when some of the series/backs were shipped/released. Since 1909 to 1911 is 3 years, some people keep it simple and just figure that 150 series to 1909, 350 to 1910, and 460 to 1911. There might be info on that specific back and Ted would be the guy to check.
  • Thanks Cap'n! I just took your advice and emailed him. If I get an answer i will report it back to this thread, in case anyone else happens to have a similar question and it may be helpful.image

THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION HAS BEEN FOUND.....

So I emailed TedZ, and his answer is the following...

    Hi Evan
The red Cobb was first printed circa Spring 1910 with the Piedmont 350 and Sweet Caporal 350 backs.

In the Summer / Fall of 1910 this Cobb was printed with American Beauty 350, Broad Leaf 350, Cycle 350, and Drum 350 backs.

The Piedmont 350-460 backs were printed.in the Fall / Winter of 1910. That timeline would be my best guess in dating your Cobb.

    Best regards,

    Ted Z

    to which I responded....

    Ted,

Your reply is greatly, greatly appreciated. And to not only provide a year, but also a season is attests to your expertise. So its a 1910, that's excellent.

In the words of the late great Harry Kalas...Ted Z, "You are the man!"

    Evan

So my answer is Fall/Winter of 1910. Glad that the riddle is solved. Thanks to all who contributed!

  • Red Cobbs are one of the classic cards in our hobby. If you are a vintage collector you really should have one. I have 3 but all from the T213 Coupon series. Some people, including Ted Z (but not myself) think the type 1 Coupons are part of T206. Ted Z is one of the nicest guys in the hobby. He is old school and started seriously collecting in the late 1940s. I stayed with him for several days when I went to do the, now defunct, Oaks show a few years ago. His lovely wife and himself were the best hosts anyone could ask for. I am sure he is correct on his answer....
  • Yessir. I never saw these Coupon T213s before, but they are cool for sure--much like the T206s.

Yea i am quite fond of my Red Cobb. I recommend you get one!image

I am more of an obscure type card collector so the Red T206 Cobb doesn't really fit my niche like these do...

  • I just checked out the values--sky high! very nice. I guess I wasnt familiar with them due to the scarcity.

A very nice 3 you have there, especially the one in the middle, at least in terms of condition.

We can certainly both agree on the fact that the red Cobb portrait is a great card to own!

I'm 35 yeas old, and collected throughout the late 80s and early 90s--all the worthless, overproduced steroid era crap.

My Dad always encouraged me to by older stuff, so I had some piedmont commons and some topps 1950s stuff, but nothing too cool.

So I'm basically hitting the reset button on my collection now, and only own 2 "real" cards--the Cobb PSA 3 and the 53 Topps Mantle PSA 3.

I pretty much shop for about 3 cards per year at about $700 per card. So those Coupons are out of my range at least for now. But congrats on owning them, and thanks for sharing the knowledge and pics!

The red back Cobb is one of my favorites. Although it's a fairly common card, it is very difficult to find one centered, focused and with bold colors. It took me FOREVER to find one that satisfied my criteria. The over-sized borders were a bonus for me.

Leon, I have said it before, but I never get tired of seeing that great trifecta. Awesome cards!!

Here is my red Cobby. Anybody else have one to share? I never tire of looking at them.

  • Yea thats a nice one for sure! Great centering and everything. Mine is a 3, you can really see a difference between the 3's and the 4's. Big price jump there as well unfortunately for me.

I will try to post mine, but I have attempted to post pictures on this forum numerous times and for some reason it doesnt work...i reduce the image size and everything, it just never takes for some reason.

Here is mine, the left to right centering could be better of course, but the most important think to my was finding one where his face was basically free of marks/blemishes. And like you, it took me forever and a day to find one. I got a good deal from a good seller on this site, and Ty's been doing just fine!image
  • OK, apparently another epic fail regarding the picture posting---I even tried using the URL method this time--I give up! you'll just have to take my word for it!image

EDIT: Wait here's a link to the pic if you want to check it out--hopefully it works!
