1890 GB 2 Florin

I was recently a successful bidder for an 1890 Great Britain 2 Florin piece. I can't find out much about it, in its rarity, value, mintage, or anything else. It seems to be a unique year for minting 2 Florin coins. If you want to see it, you can look in the HA website for auction 231326, lot # 63078 on June 27th. Any information would be appreciated.

Most prices in the 110-170 pound range in England. sorta 170-260 USD or so...

I will try to check your reference for your coin as to grade.

Edit: 184 USD a great price you paid. I would have hazarded a guess toward the upper end of my estimate. However, this is an UNLOVED denomination.

PS By repute, this denomination was referred to as the "Barmaid's Woe/Curse" as they were accustomed to bestowing certain favours for a crown or 5/-, but were
passed these to "get the goodies" for only 4/-!

Holy ----! I'm sorry for the seller. I think HA did them a dis-service when they combined this with an 1890 6p cleaned MS60 as the lead coin. I got a great bargain.

Do you have a link to the auction or a picture of the coin?

I'm not good with either of these. If you go to HA.com, you can sign-up for free and look-up the auction that I posted. If you wait shortly, there are those on these boards who can do exactly what you want.

With the exception of proofs and the so called 'inverted 1' variety, these rarely make Spink book price. Struck only from 1887 to 1890, they are too few in number to collect as a denomination. 9 main varieties of proofs and currency pieces, plus a few minor variations on these from different dies is not sufficient to form a specialist collection. There are far more patterns of this denomination which include the 1868 gold pattern (WR372), the 4 main Huth types struck in a variety of metals and the two 1950 patterns, but for whatever reason, a lot of collectors take no interest in either proofs or patterns and so the series languishes unloved as 7jags says.

I like these- not sure they will achieve wide spread popularity with collectors, but so what?

Enjoy the coin especially if it is quality for the grade

The way I look at it, you did well! Double florins might not have been very popular in the Jubilee Head days, but they are now - in the form of 20p pieces.

    Mintage: 782,146
English Silver Coins Rarity in high grade: N
Value: in the £25 to £55 range (US EF45 is roughly British VF). That's about $38-$83.

Edit: My bad, it is the lesser example you just showed. When I looked it up there was an MS66 @ 184 USD

  • Those are beautiful coins in good condition. The value of double Florin goes up to $80 or so. However, museum-quality antiques are valued in thousands or tens of thousands….

Thanks Zohar for putting the coin up on line. Others may now know what I purchased. Thanks everyone else for their added commemtary on the two florin "odd duck".

  • I'm a fan of these and the florins. For me, these double florins bring to mind the short run US 20 cents. A denomination idea that made it to production, even if only for a little while.

Somehow that crown always put me in mind of a cap or crown worn by an organ grinder's monkey. image

    Here's the actual "mini" crown........
