78, 79, 81, 84 Wax Football Rip

I picked up 2 packs of each with my eBay bucks from Steve and am in the process of ripping tonight. I started in reverse chronological order. Here are the results so far. I'll just scan the best card.

The entertainment factor in these rips is worth a lot. So fun. This is warmup for National.

Thunderdan that Montana looks very sharp.

Easily an 8 and maybe a 9. The centering looks like it is strong enough to get a 9 to me.

Does it look mint in hand to you?

Great rip! That's some serious luck with only two packs from each year. Nice work.

Four mint corners, but the centering might keep it an 8

79s had terrible centering. I did pull an off centered Boobie, though.

And the 78s were ok. pulled two Paytons, but the money card was nowhere to be found. The Payton main card is pretty O/C. Overall, though, this rip was a blast!

It's tough. I am going to take the over and say 9.

Awesome pulls for such a small sample size...you did great, Dan!

Solid 8 on the Montana, maybe an 8.5 on a good day. Good luck!

It could go either way, David. I think it has a chance at a 9, but not a lock by any means.

    8, 8.5 or 9 wouldn't shock me, but I'll go with an 8.

    PSA 8

Your example looks much better then this one. I am going to look for some PSA 9's to compare it to.

    PSA 9

I will try and find some more. Using this as an example I like your chances still.

I don't know Dan, after looking at those examples Dpeck posted I like your chances on pulling a 9. Remember that 1983 box from last year, you weren't sure if you would score 9's on those either. I'm like you and like to be on the conservative side, but I'd take Mr. Montana on a road trip next month. image

  • Amazing pulls. That Montana looks like an 8.5. That top and bottom left corners are whats keeping me from saying a 9 but close up scans like can that make a card look worse than it may appear in hand so your right, it could go either way. You definitely have an 8 but I don't think your centering is bad either and I believe you can get a 9 with centering like that. Still a great card either way.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,743 ✭✭✭✭✭
I agree with Foo's assessment. The centering is within parameters for Mint 9 grade and it's certainly possible if they don't knick you on the bottom left corner, in particular.

I'll vote 9 on the Montana. Great rips! I'd be interested in the 78 Payton if you want to unload it.

    Thanks,

  • I still say an 8.5 (which could go either way, although I'm not 100% convinced I'm looking at a 9 either) but ruling out that yours might not be a 9 because of the centering is absurb after you see this card.

    Nothing to worry about
  • tmgrnzx9rtmgrnzx9r Posts: 546 ✭✭✭
I'm with foo and grote with an 8.5
I hope we are wrong though.
    Congrats on the nice pulls!!

Huge shout out to Eric (Those Back Pages) for being kind enough to take these two cards early to National for grading. Eric, thank you once again for taking care of all this--very much appreciated.

Here are these two graded. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised on both. I wish that was always case with PSA submissions.
