Most creative reason for lowering my price I have received so far....

You know how sometimes people send an email asking if you can lower the price on a card? Normally, it is a quick, "Hey, can you take X?," well this one takes the cake. I received this one the other day:

Hello! I know this is a stretch and a lot to ask, but you're my last hope so I thought I would try. It is my fiance's birthday in a little over a month, as well as our anniversary, and I know nothing will make him happier than this card. However, we are both medical students piled up with debt and right now I have been saving to buy him a present, yet cannot afford anything over $200.00. I know that is half your asking price, but if there is any chance at all you would take this offer please let me know, you would have the kindest heart ever and would make a young struggling couple's year! I hope you will consider! Please let me know and thank you so much for reading this!
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

  • Assuming that the person who is writing to you REALLY is the person they say they are (...but I doubt it), seems like they need to get there priorities straight.

Got the exact same message about 6 months ago. I tried to work with the girl, and even offered her the card for a good bit below VCP average. She wanted a really substantial discount, like around what the card sells for 1-2 grades lower. I ended up starting the card for 99 cents, and it quickly blew by what I offered to sell her the card for with 2 days still left in the auction. She might should have taken my offer. Long story short, seems to be a scam to get cards on the cheap.....

There was zero doubt in my mind that she was not legit, but it was creative and funny so I thought I'd share. I do wonder how many people fall for her story.

  • I don't think many fall for it. Money talks.

My reply would be as follows:

Dear young lady, (or if you are a young gay couple, Dear Sir)

How very nice to want to give your fiance something so nice. I definitely want your fiance and you to be happy, so here is what I will do. I am making a colored copy of the card and sending it to you. This way he will have something to open on his birthday. I will keep this card to the side until you both graduate from Medical School. At that time you will both be making a nice salary and you can send me $1,000.00 and I will send you the card.

Best of luck in Medical School. If you get married before graduation please send me a photo.

The man with the kindest heart ever,

    Jakt

  • Hey, it's worth a shot. All it takes is one "yes", and it was worth inventing the story.
'Sir, I realize it's been difficult for you to sleep at night without your EX/MT 1977 Topps Tom Seaver, but I swear to you that you'll get it safe and sound.'
