Star Co. Basketball graded by BGS, BCCG

Do you trust the Star Co. Basketball cards graded by BGS and BCCG to be authentic? I know you have to take any BCCG grades with a grain of salt but are they checked for authenticity, and does BGS know what they are doing when they grade Star basketball?

Why? Why Not?

I was thinking of buying some, but I am hesitant as I don't want to get stuck with a pile of garbage.

I have the same questions as I would like to add some starr jordans to my Jordan collection.
I know natsturner a new member on these forums has the best Jordan collection along with most/all Starr jordans, so he may be one to ask.

Star is no harder to authenticate than '86 Fleer. There are a lot of good fakes of each.

The BGS graded Star Co. are solid. It's easier to tell the fakes from the real thing than many believe. Could one or two slip by graders, sure, never say never. Even PSA makes mistakes. I think it's the 85/86 issue , believe that was the 3rd and last series before Fleer took over in 86/87, that used the original plates for reprinting but even those can be distinguished from originals. PSA could grade them, if they wanted to put forth the time, effort and get the right folks to look at them. They choose not to, so be it. Only ones I have are my personal collection Drexler's from 83-86 and I'm 100% confident they are legit.

BGS is a fine, solid company and authenticates the Star Jordans perfectly. There are as many if not more fakes these days of the Fleer, a slew of which were pictured recently on another thread-- and these can find their way into high-quality fake PSA slabs no less. There have also been several threads about the Star cards on this forum, which could probably be dug up via search function.

Just because one company in PSA chooses not to authenticate an item, that does not mean and should not be interpreted as there being something wrong with said item. PSA blew it on some Star fakes many years ago and just has not revisited the issue since. Far from neurosurgery, it is a simple issue of acquiring the proper knowledge, with BGS has done-- and thus now can thankfully provide service to the many fans of these cards.

Does PSA grade the Star baseball cards from 89-90?

At this point I trust the BGS graded Star cards.

I am not certain who does their authenticating but they were probably trained by Steve Taft. I have bought BGS Star cards and submitted to them as well.

I use to be a big fan of Star cards in the 90's. But they still have a huge cloud over them IMO. When you look at what PSA does, grade, (packs, various over sized cards, regionals) one of the few big omissions is Star. Esp with the popularity of Jordan and his 86 Fleer card.

It puts a damper on the whole market, even if BGS and BCCG are fine. If PSA ever graded them the market would soar.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Matt I agree with this 100%. And the reality is that PSA has such a huge impact on the hobby as it is right now that the simple fact that they do not grade them has hurt their value tremendously. I think they are so underpriced and undervalued. Not just the Jordan, but all the other Star Rookies (Barkley, Stockton, Dominique, Drexler, Isiah, Olajuwan, etc etc) If and when PSA decides to get back in that game again, you will see a huge spike up in prices and values. I think they are a great investment as a result

"PSA does not grade 1955 Topps unperforated Double Headers or any card manufactured by Star, except for Star Baseball and 1996 Star Topps (reprint) Basketball Cards."
