Where are the top grade Liberty Nickels

dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,732 ✭✭✭✭✭
In looking at Typetone's set, which gradewise is identical to Frank Thomas' as that is the set he bought (but has replaced pieces with equal graded pieces), who has all of the pieces that are of higher grade. There are 9 MS67 1883NC (one is on Ebay now, another sold on Teletrade a few months back), but none of these 67's are in a registered set (there are 23 for the series). Who has these? Is there one or two complete sets of these that are unregistered? I would love to talk to some of these folks (my kind of people).

I need some more $$$ to try and root out these high grade coins image

Edited to add: Wondercoin, when you read this, which I am sure you will. I know you put out a call to find some of these pieces (as well as high grade coins from other classic series). Have you located any of these high grade Liberty Nickels?

I remember a while back, Heritage auctioned a couple of MS-67's from the 1900's, yet I haven't seen them appear in sets either. Must be some unregistered sets that are killer in composition.

Would have to be a while, I only have one PCGS MS67 being auctioned in nearly two years ( a 1900 for $4,025) (this is only the top live auction houses, no teletrade. May need to place those results into my database)

Keith: see you still need an 1883NC for your type set. Just got an MS65 yesterday (an Eliasberg coin for my collection) Want to lease the number, I will not be using it? image

    Back to the norm.

Wondercoin, which pieces do you have? Inquiring minds have to know.

Seriously Pat, now wouldn't that be too funny if I had the best set of MS Liberty Nickels (unregistered) and I was the fellow dbldie55 always wanted to meet (his "kind of people"). image Wondercoin.

dbldie55: Back to reality, I am helping a collector build a top notch MS Liberty Nickel collection. He has a nice mix of PCGS and NGC coins (scattered MS67s in the set in one company holder or the other). I recently assisted him in acquiring the 1892 in PCGS-MS66 (pop 2/0). Of course, some of the MS66 coins are "top grade" as well.

The coins are very difficult to locate. Maybe one improvement every 6 months is the realistic goal. image Wondercoin

Glad to hear you are starting to work on some "real" sets image

Sometimes it just takes more than a desire. It is nice to know that there are other "wierdo's" like me out there.

Edited to add: I would actually like to meet you! I am sure in this hobby, we have much, much more in common than in differences.

dbldie55: Why not come along with Dale on May 14th into Orange County, CA for the next invitational? You can probably get a cheap airfare still and I'll make sure you are "wined and dined". image Wondercoin

Would love to but, since I am just now employed again my vacation is pretty much shot up (I am actually the, on call, 24 hour guy that week. And now I have another company offering me a job. Ugh decisions.) But I will try to get down that way some time. Especially if I can get near a Dodgers game (my true love in the LA area).

I don't know who owns it, but the Sunnywood Collection has some great pieces. It is combined NGC and PCGS and #1 in the NGC registry. It was briefly registered in the PCGS registry but is now gone. Some of the highlights

    67s - 83NC NGC, 83 NGC, 93 NGC, 12D NGC, 00 PCGS
    PCGS 66s - 12, 09, 05, 04, 03.

I also correspond with one or two other Lib collectors, but don't really know what they have. Most top sets are combined NGC/PCGS.

Dbldie, I think you are right. Most of the better graded pieces don't seem to be registered anywhere. I would be surprised if there is a full PCGS graded set of 66s and 67s, but you never know.

    Mitch et all:

I would love to be able to improve my set and am now looking for nice examples of any common date 66s I don't already have including the 99, 00, 01, 02, 04, 11, or 12D. If you have any leads, or if your guy, Mitch, has some dup 66s, please feel free to give me a show.

I keep looking for the NC in 58 to 64. I'm too cheap to buy a 65, but every time I see a lower graded piece, it usually gets bid too high or has no eye appeal. I'd really kill for a With Rays Shield nickel in 58 to 62, but no success there either.
