How can this guy get such high prices on Ebay for raw cards

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-TOPPS-BREAK-135-MICKEY-MANTLE-YANKEES-NM-/171048345583?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item27d3469fef

Check out his other sales other than the Mantle.

I mean the scans are decent. I have cards that look like this. You cannot tell whether a card will be investment grade quality by a scan.

I look through his stuff it is amazing.

Here is another example. I know this card well. Is it his following

Please let me know your thoughts on the above

I know that the '72 Aaron IA card is almost never found centered.

I bought from him to fill in some cards I wanted for my 1960 raw set.

His cards are nice and accurately graded(for the most part...I don't think he takes into account surface and centering).

    I think it's a combination of factors:

-Some are buying to send in and get graded. I think some of these people will be disappointed.
-There seem to be a few bidders absolutely desperate to complete sets. I've seen certain cards go for twice "book" and I'm not talking about known tough commons. No reason at all that someone should be paying the same price for an exmt raw card as they would a psa 7 with same centering.
-spazzy bidders. There's a few bidders in his auctions who blanket bid a minimum amount early on. Often these bids won't be enough to win, but it is enough to force the next bidder to pay a decent price for the card and if two people decide they want it....

I've met him in person - a nice guy. He has bought a few nice sets from me via ebay over the years too.

He breaks 20-30 sets per year - most of them ebay buys. Like most of the established set breakers, he has built a following.

I think guys will bid up some cards thinking that they will win others for less than max, and it will all even out - particularly with combined shipping.

He was briefly a poster on these boards, but it was always to link to his set breaks - pure marketing.

Eeesh...I don't doubt that's true, but that's some awkward sort of thinking there.

I bought a card years ago from him. When it arrived, it had a crease, so I emailed him, telling him I was returning it. Subsequently, he put me on his blocked bidder list.

    Thanks for the replies.

He is getting several $100 s of dollars for star cards. Like I said nice scans but not great. Would never pay that kind of money for raws without cards in hand.

People paying PSA 8+ level prices for raw cards. That is a losing man's game

I bought the 72 Aaron IA. The winning bidder did not pay, and I accepted a 2nd chance offer. I think I paid $165. The card graded PSA 8. As someone noted, the card is tough to find centered. I took a chance, and am pleased with the result. I have never had a problem with this seller-PSA has graded every card I have bought from him. They have ranged from 7-9.

awkward it is, but true. it works when you take a stab at multiple cards in set breaks, pay a little more to get better examples, and aim also for some which might get ignored amongst so many.

doesn't matter who the seller is. the seller being discussed here has always been quite cordial to me and i've had varied success purchasing from his breaks.

recently, though, it hasn't been very attractive with so many bidders piling on.

good for the seller, that's what is supposed to happen.

Thanks for the link. I have bought raw cards from him, most recently some 1970 baseball and all the cards delivered were very nice. He does have a following because there were plenty of bids on some of the nicer cards and high numbers. I couldn't compete with some of the prices. I also bought some really nice 73's from him a month or so back.Nice cards, quick delivery.I'll continue to check out his cards.

Do the grades he gives in the action titles seem off to you guys? I just looked over some of the completed 1970 cards and in many cases there are off-center cards that are described as mint. I suppose they could come back 9(OC). The 70 Nolan Ryan is described as NM/MT+, but it was OC and it's hard to tell what's going on with the upper right hand corner.

Yeah I think he and most other raw card sellers tend to over grade. I look at a card that he supposedly says is mint and bid it down 1 or 2 grades depending on the scans and my humble image opinion. If someone want to bid the card to Nm-Mt or Mint I'm usually out. I'm sure you do the same with raw cards

    Sir,

You are not allowed to question this seller's professional reputation. All of his cards are mint and will grade a 10 according to him. So you are wrong. You have learned your lesson. (TIC)!!!

Work hard and you will succeed!!
