I plan to stop at B&H photo in NY this week and from looking online I think I narrowed it down to 2.
Are these overkill for pics. of my coins and some ebay sales? From what I have read Bencher is a
very good brand and I would not have to worry about the camera/lens not being held securely
vertical to the platform.
My camera and lens weigh a little under 3 pounds . The lens is 100MM macro so I wanted a min.
of 36 inch column for full slab shots.

While pricey they are of professional quality. Glad I was able to find a used one for sale.

I use the copymate II. Looks like the III is a little taller. That might be helpful if you use a longer lens like a 180 or 200. a 100 should be fine with the II. All depends upon how serious you are as to the price. Good copystand and it will work well.

If your going to B&H check out the Kaiser RS-1 and RS-2 also.

Then whatever brand model you like try to find it on the secondary market as you can easily save 50% off new retail.

I use and love the Bencher Copymate II... and a good friend pointed me at a used one that cost $100.

I have 3 benchers and have killed a couple of them or at least the airlines have killed them for me. Great stands.

I think they have the Kaisers in the ANA class I am teaching this week, they are just fine.

I am sure either of those stands will serve you well, but I don't think spending $400 or $500 is absolutely necessary. This has worked like a champ for me, is well made, and includes 2 bulb stands for about 1/3 of the cost of the ones you are considering. I take full slab shots with this stand and a 2.8/90mm macro lens.

Mine is very similar to the copymate II, and is a very solid copy stand.

I'd be reluctant to go any higher than 36". If you use a 180mm macro, there might be a benefit to something 48" tall. However, I've found that with a heavy DSLR and heavy macro lens, the vibrations start to get slightly noticeable at 36", and this would increase on a 48" height.

I use a Beseler CS-14 and it is excellent choice although not cheap.
