How do you tell which sheet a card came from?

Looking around at uncut sheets of Topps here and there got me wondering;
How do you tell which sheet a particular card came off of?
Ive looked on the back of some of my cards and they have a letter followed by a little *
So on an 87 Bo Jackson is f* does that mean it came off the 6th sheet?

Any help would be great.

Yes, the F sheet. Though there are frequent errors on the sheet designator causing variations. You'll see some with E*F* that are later corrected to E* or F*. I'm not aware of any variations on the 87 Bo in particular.
